Delpasand Tea Box: A Storytelling Approach to Packaging

Illustrated design bridges cultures and enhances tea selection experience.

Delpasand, designed by Mohammadreza Eslamparast, reimagines black tea packaging by blending cultural symbolism with modern illustration, offering consumers a visually engaging and distinctive product on the shelf.

The Delpasand tea box stands out in the competitive world of beverage packaging through its unique narrative-driven illustrations. Inspired by the teapot as a universal symbol of tea and warmth, the design draws from the distinct atmospheres of Ceylon and Iran, the origins of the two tea varieties featured. Each box incorporates national symbols—such as elephants and temples for Ceylon, and lush farms for Iran—creating an immediate visual connection to the tea's provenance.

Mohammadreza Eslamparast’s approach leverages bold, sharp colors and illustrated motifs to differentiate the product from conventional packaging, which often relies on photographic imagery. This choice not only enhances shelf visibility but also invites consumers to explore the story behind each blend. The use of black as the primary color references the hue of dried tea leaves, while the vibrant illustrations make selection intuitive and engaging.

Technically, the packaging is realized through offset printing on cardboard, utilizing a five-color process (CMYK plus one Pantone) with UV and embossing techniques. This meticulous production ensures both visual appeal and tactile quality, aligning with industry standards for premium packaging. The box measures 120 mm in width, 80 mm in depth, and 200 mm in height, offering a substantial yet manageable presence.

Research played a pivotal role in the design process, with the team dedicating ten days to analyzing market trends and identifying opportunities for differentiation. The decision to use flat illustration emerged from a desire to break away from the prevalent use of real-life images, resulting in a packaging solution that feels both modern and approachable. The illustrations serve as a narrative device, transforming the act of choosing tea into an engaging experience akin to reading a story.

One of the primary challenges addressed by the design was the integration of multiple characters, objects, and vibrant colors within the limited space of the teapot motif. The solution—a harmonious composition that balances detail with clarity—demonstrates both creativity and technical skill. The result is a package that not only protects and presents the product but also communicates its cultural richness and quality.

Delpasand’s innovative approach has not gone unnoticed, earning the Iron A' Design Award in 2025 for its effective blend of practicality, aesthetics, and storytelling. This recognition underscores the design’s contribution to elevating everyday rituals through thoughtful, culturally resonant packaging.

Delpasand exemplifies how artful design can transform a simple tea box into a medium for cultural exchange and consumer engagement. By prioritizing narrative illustration and technical excellence, the project sets a new standard for packaging in the beverage industry, inviting consumers to savor both the tea and its story.
