Merry Individual Habitats: Redefining Shared Living Spaces

Innovative residential design balances privacy and togetherness for modern couples

Her Guang Interior Design Co., Ltd. introduces Merry Individual Habitats, a residential project inspired by Japanese aesthetics and designed to support both shared and independent lifestyles for mature couples.

Merry Individual Habitats draws inspiration from the homeowners’ appreciation for Japanese design, seamlessly blending light and natural wood tones to create a serene and inviting atmosphere. The open cabinet’s curved form, reminiscent of a “giant black pillar,” and the glass lattice doors at the entrance evoke the ambiance of an inner-Machiya, a traditional Japanese townhouse. This thoughtful approach ensures that every detail contributes to a harmonious and tranquil living environment.

The project stands out for its unique spatial arrangement, addressing the evolving needs of couples who value both companionship and personal space. By allocating two-thirds of the 136-square-meter residence to shared areas and one-third to private domains, the design introduces the concept of “friendly separation.” This layout allows each partner to maintain a self-reliant lifestyle while still enjoying communal experiences, a solution particularly relevant for those working from home or approaching retirement.

Innovative architectural solutions are at the heart of Merry Individual Habitats. The “room within a room” concept is applied to both bedrooms and the study, offering tailored privacy for each occupant. The study features a folding door that transforms the space into a temporary glass room for uninterrupted phone meetings. In the bedroom zone, a hallway separates the husband’s and wife’s rooms, with a dressing room in between, ensuring minimal disturbance for individuals with different schedules.

The design’s functionality is further enhanced by strategic placement of spaces according to natural light and usage patterns. Shared areas benefit from ample daylight at the front of the residence, while private rooms are positioned at the quieter rear, adjacent to peaceful lanes. This careful zoning supports both collaborative and independent activities, fostering a balanced and harmonious home life.

Underlying the project is a response to societal trends in aging populations, where couples increasingly seek autonomy without sacrificing connection. Merry Individual Habitats offers a “third option” between cohabitation and separation, promoting healthier relationships through respect for individual routines. The project also demonstrates environmental responsibility by minimizing demolition and waste, achieving significant functional improvements with minimal structural changes.

Recognized with the Iron A’ Design Award in 2025, Merry Individual Habitats exemplifies how innovative residential design can address contemporary lifestyle needs. Her Guang Interior Design Co., Ltd. sets a new standard for adaptable, sustainable, and emotionally fulfilling living environments, inspiring future approaches to shared housing.
