Nana Watanabe’s Shrimps earrings draw direct inspiration from the intricate world of marine life. The designer’s fascination with shrimp, particularly their translucent and delicate forms, led to a creative exploration of how embroidery and textile manipulation could capture these qualities. Research into marine biology and the structural possibilities of origami informed the design, resulting in earrings that are both visually captivating and technically advanced.
The earrings are crafted from flat embroidered organza, which is cut and folded to create a three-dimensional effect reminiscent of a shrimp’s form. This process incorporates origami-inspired folds, lending a sculptural quality to the piece. Notably, the design features translucent eggs on the abdomen, a subtle detail that highlights the designer’s attention to naturalistic accuracy. The structure cleverly incorporates air, making the earrings exceptionally lightweight—each piece weighs only about 3 grams despite its size.
Production of the Shrimps earrings involves a meticulous process. The initial pattern is hand-drawn and modeled in paper before being digitized for machine embroidery. Rayon thread is used on organza fabric, which is then heat-cut and assembled through a combination of adhesive and hand sewing. The challenge of bonding organza was overcome by reinforcing the structure with rayon stitches, ensuring both durability and the preservation of the delicate shape. This innovative approach allows the earrings to maintain their form while remaining soft and comfortable to wear.
The earrings’ technical specifications further underscore their uniqueness. Measuring approximately 5cm by 8.5cm by 3cm, they are packaged in a luxurious gift box, emphasizing their status as wearable art. The transparency of the organza, combined with the vibrant gradient-dyed rayon, creates a luminous effect that brightens the wearer’s face. The design’s lightweight nature ensures comfort, while its artistic flair distinguishes it from conventional jewelry.
The development of the Shrimps earrings was marked by extensive research and prototyping. Various materials and patterns were tested, and feedback from peers helped refine the final design. The process balanced humor, artistry, and comfort, resulting in a piece that is both playful and sophisticated. The project also prioritized sustainability and local production, reflecting a thoughtful approach to contemporary jewelry making.
Recognized with a Bronze A' Jewelry Design Award in 2025, the Shrimps earrings exemplify the fusion of art, science, and craftsmanship. Nana Watanabe’s innovative use of embroidery and origami techniques not only celebrates marine beauty but also sets a new standard for creative ingenuity in wearable art.
