Quiet Contemplation: Wabi-Sabi Living in Taichung

Fabio Su crafts a tranquil residential retreat inspired by nature and simplicity.

Drawing on the timeless beauty of wabi-sabi, Fabio Su’s Quiet Contemplation residence in Taichung, Taiwan, reimagines urban living as an oasis of calm, blending natural materials, intelligent technology, and minimalist design to foster inner peace and comfort.

Quiet Contemplation, designed by Fabio Su, stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of wabi-sabi aesthetics. The project redefines residential architecture by prioritizing leisure and comfort, intentionally stripping away superfluous decoration to reveal a pure, natural atmosphere. Inspired by the interplay of light and shadow, the design slows the city’s relentless pace, inviting residents to savor moments of tranquility within their daily routines.

Distinctive for its subtractive approach, the residence avoids ornate materials and instead celebrates the raw textures of mineral paint, stone, rattan, and solid wood. A patio ceiling introduces abundant natural light, transforming the interior with shifting patterns and moods throughout the day. The integration of an RGB situational lighting control system further enhances the ambiance, allowing for tailored atmospheres to suit any occasion. This careful orchestration of light and materiality creates a living environment that is both visually engaging and deeply soothing.

Technological innovation is seamlessly woven into the project’s fabric. A whole-house intelligent control system manages lighting, climate, and ambiance, ensuring both comfort and energy efficiency. The use of environmentally friendly materials, such as KD PP boards and melamine, underscores a commitment to sustainability. Artistic coatings and mineral paints provide a tactile richness, while clear and gray glass elements maintain openness and fluidity between spaces.

The design process was rooted in close collaboration with the client, who sought a relaxed and comfortable home. Addressing challenges such as limited floor height and complex pipeline configurations, the team employed organic, irregular arcs to evoke the feel of a natural cave. This approach not only resolved technical constraints but also reinforced the project’s core philosophy of simplicity and harmony with nature.

Quiet Contemplation’s success is reflected in its recognition with the Bronze A' Design Award for Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design in 2025. The project exemplifies best practices in art, science, and technology, offering a model for how thoughtful design can elevate everyday living and contribute to overall well-being. Fabio Su’s work demonstrates that, even in the heart of a bustling city, it is possible to create a sanctuary that celebrates the quiet beauty of life’s simplest moments.

With its masterful blend of natural materials, intelligent systems, and minimalist aesthetics, Quiet Contemplation invites residents to rediscover the value of stillness and the profound comfort found in simplicity.
