Transforming Audience Movements into Dynamic Digital Artworks

Yuming Chen’s "Flow" redefines the boundaries of generative art, inviting audiences to interact with AI-created visuals in real time, making digital creativity accessible and engaging for all.

"Flow" stands as a pioneering project in the realm of interactive generative art, merging advanced AI models with motion capture technology. Developed by Yuming Chen, this installation enables viewers to influence and shape AI-generated artworks through simple body movements, creating a dynamic and immersive experience. The project addresses a key limitation of traditional AI art generators, which often restrict user input to text prompts and static results, by introducing a new layer of real-time, physical interactivity.

At the core of "Flow" is the integration of fast-generating AI macromodels, such as SD turbo, within the Touch Designer platform. This setup allows for instant image generation upon receiving descriptive prompts from the audience. The real innovation, however, lies in the system’s ability to capture and interpret the viewer’s movements via a camera, translating gestures into data that actively alters the evolving artwork on screen. As a result, the audience becomes an integral part of the creative process, moving beyond passive observation to active participation.

The technical realization of "Flow" involves custom Python plug-ins that connect Touch Designer to the AI model’s API, facilitating seamless communication and image generation. Visual effects, including particle systems, are layered onto the generated images to enhance their aesthetic appeal. The camera’s motion capture capabilities feed real-time data into the system, ensuring that every gesture—whether a wave of the hand or a subtle shift—directly impacts the visual outcome.

To maintain a fluid and responsive interaction, Yuming Chen selected AI models capable of producing lower-resolution images at high speeds. The generated artworks are preset to a 500×500 resolution, balancing visual clarity with a smooth frame rate of approximately 10 FPS during audience engagement. This technical compromise is skillfully offset by digital art techniques that enhance the visual richness of the output, ensuring that the experience remains captivating despite the resolution trade-off.

"Flow" not only democratizes access to AI-generated art but also expands the creative possibilities for non-professional audiences. By transforming static digital images into living, responsive artworks, the project exemplifies how technology can foster new forms of artistic expression and audience involvement. The installation’s recognition with a Silver A' Design Award in 2025 underscores its innovative approach and technical excellence, setting a new standard for interactive digital art experiences.
