Yang Tian’s Newspaper Poster Reimagines Urban Living and Heritage

Unfolding A Nakagin Story stands as a tribute to the Nakagin Capsule Tower, a symbol of post-war Japanese innovation and the Metabolism architectural movement. Designed by Yang Tian, this newspaper poster invites audiences to physically engage with the concept of change, echoing the building’s dynamic, cell-like structure. The project’s relevance is heightened by ongoing global discussions about adaptive architecture and the preservation of modernist heritage.

The inspiration behind the design draws from the newspaper’s inherent flexibility and daily transformation. As Yang Tian explains, the act of unfolding a newspaper to reveal new information mirrors the Metabolism movement’s emphasis on adaptability and growth. Each unfolding of the poster reveals shifting capsule patterns, window colors, and orientations, all arranged within an oblique neutral grid. This interactive approach not only reflects the building’s modularity but also encourages users to experience the evolving nature of urban environments.

What sets Unfolding A Nakagin Story apart is its ability to document and expand the Metabolism imagination through a tactile medium. The design highlights seven capsules, each exposing the interior activities and personal stories of individual inhabitants. This juxtaposition of individuality within a collective structure underscores the Metabolist vision of a society where people are no longer confined to fixed spaces, but instead inhabit environments that grow and adapt alongside them.

The realization of the project involved advanced digital tools, with graphics crafted in Photoshop and Illustrator, and architectural modeling executed in Rhino using a Grasshopper plugin. This technological integration allowed for the seamless alteration of patterns and orientations, ensuring each unfolding offers a unique visual and narrative experience. The final product measures 8" x 12" on the cover and expands to 16" x 24" when fully unfolded, embodying the concept of transformation both in form and function.

Yang Tian’s research delves into the historical context of Metabolism, particularly Kisho Kurokawa’s vision of time-based, ever-changing living spaces. The design addresses the challenge of representing growth and individuality within repetitive architectural units, using the newspaper’s unfolding mechanism to symbolize both collective evolution and personal stories. This innovative approach not only celebrates the Nakagin Capsule Tower’s legacy but also prompts reflection on the future of urban living.
