Syn: A Mechanical Calendar Bridging Tradition and Innovation

Jia Sheng Chen’s Syn reimagines timekeeping with tactile, universal design.

Inspired by Lo-Tek philosophy, Syn offers a non-digital, interactive calendar experience that merges traditional wisdom with modern needs.

Jia Sheng Chen’s Syn calendar stands as a testament to the enduring relevance of physical design in a digital age. Drawing inspiration from Lo-Tek principles, which emphasize traditional knowledge and sustainable innovation, Syn transforms the conventional calendar into a three-dimensional, mechanical object. This approach not only pays homage to the roots of timekeeping but also addresses the growing desire for tactile, non-electric alternatives in daily life.

Unlike standard digital planners, Syn features a unique, clock-like structure with laser-cut acrylic or glass pointers, engraved aluminum frames, and color-coded elements. Users interact with the calendar by manually adjusting pointers to mark dates and events, offering a hands-on experience that fosters a deeper connection with time management. The engraved marks on the frame indicate general hours, while the multi-color design helps differentiate between various tasks and occasions.

One of Syn’s most innovative aspects is its universal adaptability. Designed to accommodate any month or date configuration, the calendar overcomes the limitations of traditional planners, which often struggle with irregular time intervals. This flexibility is achieved through meticulous engineering, including rubber gaskets for smooth pointer movement and a robust aluminum CNC frame, ensuring both durability and precision.

The project’s development, completed in Los Angeles between January and June 2024, involved extensive research into human interaction with time and the psychological impact of digital dependency. By offering a non-electric, visually engaging alternative, Syn encourages users to slow down and engage more thoughtfully with their schedules. The design’s success is underscored by its recognition with the Silver A' Design Award in 2025, celebrating its technical excellence and artistic innovation.

Syn’s blend of traditional knowledge and modern craftsmanship not only redefines the aesthetics of homeware but also introduces a new paradigm for personal organization. As lifestyles become increasingly digitized, such tactile, thoughtfully designed objects remind users of the value in slowing down and connecting with the physical world.

With its award-winning design and universal functionality, Syn invites users to experience time in a more mindful and interactive way, offering a refreshing alternative to the fleeting nature of digital calendars.
