Stacks: A Wabi-Sabi Inspired Home by Yu Hong Wu

Situated in Miaoli, Taiwan, and completed in April 2023, “Stacks” is a residential project that exemplifies the harmonious balance of form and function. Conceived for a client who values both comfort and sophistication, the design centers on creating a versatile studio that caters to discerning audiovisual needs while embodying the understated beauty of wabi-sabi—a Japanese philosophy celebrating imperfection and transience.

The project’s unique character emerges from its naturalistic approach, where the interplay of light and shadow animates the interiors. The central theme of “stacks” is visually expressed through layered lines and surfaces, establishing a narrative that guides the eye across the space. Materials and colors are meticulously chosen to evoke tranquility, with eco-friendly wood panels and artistic paint made from reservoir sludge adding both texture and sustainability. These elements are not only aesthetically pleasing but also certified to reduce environmental toxins such as formaldehyde, underscoring a commitment to health and ecological responsibility.

Key features include a TV wall with elegantly curved corners and integrated cabinetry, enhancing both visual appeal and storage efficiency. The flooring design creates a sophisticated layering effect, connecting the wooden base of the TV area to the elevated kitchen island bar. This thoughtful elevation also serves a practical purpose, seamlessly integrating plumbing and preventing common issues like clogging. A bathroom door with a grille partition introduces textural intrigue while maintaining a minimalist flair, further reinforcing the home’s cohesive design language.

Spatial organization is another hallmark of “Stacks.” The open-plan studio layout, enhanced by a redesigned bathroom with separate wet and dry zones, promotes fluid movement and a sense of openness. Overlapping contours and orderly grille lines define the space, while soothing color tones and natural materials cultivate a calm, sophisticated atmosphere. The integration of an upgraded electrical system ensures that the home meets modern entertainment and lifestyle demands without compromising its serene ambiance.

“Stacks” has garnered recognition for its innovative yet practical design, earning the Iron A’ Design Award in 2025 for Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design.
