Dwelling S: Merging Modern Luxury with Home Comfort

Qu Space Design crafts a residence blending hotel elegance and personal warmth.

Located in Taiwan and completed in August 2023, Dwelling S stands as a testament to the evolving expectations of modern homeowners. The project was conceived for a frequent traveler seeking both the refined amenities of a hotel and the emotional resonance of a private home. The design centers on a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetics, with a particular emphasis on a transparent wine cellar that serves as both a display and a private retreat. This approach transforms the home into a space where personal taste and lifestyle are celebrated.

The heart of the residence is the kitchen island dining table, which, along with the adjacent open area, forms the social nucleus of the home. Hsiu-Ju Hsu introduced a suspended table crafted from stone and wood, eliminating traditional chair legs for a sleek, child-friendly design. This centerpiece not only enhances visual appeal but also fosters social interaction, making it ideal for gatherings. The fully transparent wine cellar, featuring a stone-like exterior, offers a striking focal point while ensuring privacy for the owner’s prized collection.

Material selection plays a pivotal role in establishing the home’s atmosphere. Large slab tiles, Venetian paint, and marble-textured stone tiles dominate the palette, with a preference for darker tones to evoke a sense of understated luxury. The use of black Venetian special paint creates a shimmering, metallic effect, while pearly veils in the detailing add depth and sophistication. Strategic lighting further distinguishes social and private areas, enhancing the overall sense of tranquility and exclusivity.

Spanning 578.5 square meters, the residence is meticulously zoned to balance communal and private functions. The layout includes four bedrooms, a living room, dining room, audio-visual area, gymnasium, reading room, and a children’s playroom. This thoughtful division allows for seamless transitions between social gatherings and intimate family moments, supporting both adult and children’s activities without interference. The design’s flexibility and optimized circulation have garnered positive feedback from occupants, who note improved comfort and sleep quality.

Dwelling S also addresses specific challenges, such as extensive storage requirements and the desire for bathtubs facing windows. Innovative solutions were implemented, including reconfigured plumbing and custom storage solutions that maintain openness and visual appeal. The result is a home that not only meets practical needs but also elevates daily living through artful design.

Recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, Dwelling S exemplifies the integration of art, science, and technology in residential architecture.
