Connecting Sculpture: A Fusion of Heritage and Modernity

Lingerie store design bridges tradition with contemporary innovation

Kun Yen Lu’s “Connecting Sculpture” transforms a longstanding lingerie store in Taiwan, blending nostalgic elements with modern aesthetics to create a space that honors legacy while embracing the future.

The “Connecting Sculpture” project, realized by designer Kun Yen Lu, reimagines the retail experience for the JIALI lingerie brand as it introduces its new line, Classy. The renovation removes former partitions, extending the store’s footprint and enabling a seamless flow between the original and new brand areas. This spatial transformation not only revitalizes the store’s image but also serves as a physical metaphor for the brand’s evolution, connecting generations of customers through thoughtful design.

Distinctive material choices define each area: gray tones and industrial finishes in the original section pay tribute to JIALI’s wholesale roots, while the new Classy area features sculptural curves and softer hues, symbolizing the modern feminine form. The central counter, constructed with Spanish bricks and glass, acts as a unifying element, visually and functionally linking both brands. Glass and mirrors introduce a sense of modernization, while neon lights and galvanized steel recall the brand’s factory origins, creating a dialogue between past and present.

Innovative use of materials such as iron, acrylic, and corrugated board enhances both visual impact and functionality. Acrylic panels in the original area soften bold color blocks, while custom-made shelves and curved glass displays in the new section showcase technical prowess and attention to detail. Laser cutting and collaboration with local factories ensured seamless integration of neon lighting and hardware, overcoming significant production challenges and elevating the store’s craftsmanship.

Customer response has been overwhelmingly positive, with the store owner noting that the design not only refreshed the brand’s image but also deepened its narrative. The space now serves as a focal point for customer engagement, effectively telling the story of JIALI’s journey from its industrial beginnings to its contemporary reinvention. Movable display cabinets, inspired by stacked cardboard boxes, and metal plates referencing early growth years, further reinforce the brand’s heritage and philosophy.

The 148.7-square-meter space stands as a testament to the power of design in retail, blending contrasting textures and colors to create a harmonious environment. The integration of old and new materials narrates the company’s history, while the open layout fosters trust and recognition among customers. This project, completed in July 2023, not only enhances the shopping experience but also sets a benchmark for innovative retail design in Taiwan.

Recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, “Connecting Sculpture” exemplifies best practices in art, design, and technology. By merging tradition with innovation, Kun Yen Lu’s work demonstrates how thoughtful design can elevate both brand identity and customer experience, making a lasting impact on the retail landscape.
