Lucid Dream: Where Art and Technology Shape Home

Blending modern aesthetics with personal expression in a Taiwanese residence

Inspired by the concept of a lucid dream—a state where creativity flourishes in comfort and awareness—Shiang Lin Lu approached the renovation with a vision to balance the husband’s passion for technology and the wife’s love for art. The design employs a sophisticated mix of materials, including titanium-plated metal, magnetic panels, and Italian tiles, to create a multi-functional environment that feels both modern and inviting. Artistic elements such as braided panels, patterned tiles, and abundant greenery infuse the space with warmth and character, while technological touches ensure a clean, streamlined aesthetic.

The apartment’s layout was reimagined to enhance social interaction and personal expression. Originally a four-room unit, the space was converted into a three-room residence, expanding the foyer and communal areas. The ceiling beams, once a structural challenge, are now a visual highlight—wrapped in titanium-plated metal bars that create a sense of flow and continuity. Large blocks of color and the interplay of marble and wood grain further emphasize the modern design ethos, while ginkgo-patterned tiles in the master bath symbolize calmness and resilience, echoing the residents’ personalities.

Functionality is at the heart of Lucid Dream. Customized storage solutions, dedicated art display areas, and expansive mineral paint-covered walls allow for future personalization and the display of cherished collections. These thoughtful details foster a deeper connection to both nature and art, enhancing the daily living experience. The use of eco-friendly materials and KEIM mineral paint underscores a commitment to sustainability and well-being.

The renovation addressed significant challenges, including uneven flooring, poor acoustic insulation, and water leakage—common issues in older buildings. Through meticulous planning and structural adjustments, Lus Design achieved a comfortable, visually stunning environment that meets the evolving needs of its occupants. The careful balance of complex patterns and textures, particularly in the selection of tiles, weaves, and wood grains, showcases the designer’s attention to proportion and harmony.

Lucid Dream has been recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, a testament to its creative ingenuity and contribution to quality of life. The project stands as a model for integrating art, technology, and personal narrative within residential design, offering inspiration for those seeking to transform everyday spaces into reflections of their dreams and identities.
