Gathering Residence: A Modern Haven for Connection

High ceilings and glass elements create a vibrant, communal home.

Located on the first floor in Taiwan, Gathering was envisioned as more than just a private residence. The design responds to the client's desire for a welcoming environment where loved ones can come together, emphasizing openness and comfort. High ceilings and an open-plan layout form the backbone of the design, fostering a sense of spaciousness and ease for visitors of all ages.

A standout feature is the upright glass block installation in the foyer, which transmits natural light while preserving privacy. This architectural element creates a striking three-dimensional visual effect, setting the tone for the rest of the home. The use of glass tiles, special paints, and titanium-plated trims adds texture and vibrancy, while a neutral grayscale palette ensures a timeless, modern appeal.

The 151-square-meter space was meticulously reorganized to prioritize communal living. The original four-bedroom layout was transformed to expand the living and dining areas, accommodating a custom three-meter-long dining table—ideal for gatherings. The adjacent storage area adopts a duplex-like design, complete with glass partitions for safety, providing children with a playful yet secure environment.

Material selection was both innovative and pragmatic. Glass tiles in the foyer required a reinforced structure at the brick joints, a labor-intensive process that distinguishes this project from conventional glass brick installations. The interplay of slab tiles, woodwork, and metallic accents further enhances the residence’s contemporary character, while ensuring durability and ease of maintenance.

Functionality extends beyond aesthetics. The public and private zones are distinctly defined, with the living and dining rooms benefiting from the ceiling’s geometric design, which cleverly conceals piping and amplifies vertical space. The master bedroom features a dedicated dressing room and additional storage, while the kitchen’s duplex layout optimizes flow and usability.

Gathering’s design journey was not without challenges. Large-format slab tiles demanded careful handling, and significant structural changes were required to accommodate new plumbing and spatial arrangements, all while respecting Feng Shui principles. The result is a harmonious, people-oriented home that balances grandeur with warmth—a testament to C9 Design’s expertise and vision.

Recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, Gathering exemplifies how thoughtful design can elevate everyday living, making spaces not just functional, but truly meaningful for those who inhabit them.
