Photosynthesis: A Modern Sanctuary for Family Living

Yu Chia Chang crafts a luminous, storage-savvy home in Taiwan

Yu Chia Chang’s “Photosynthesis” residence redefines urban family living by blending natural light, modern materials, and ingenious storage solutions, creating a tranquil yet practical haven for a family of four.

Located in Taiwan and completed in July 2023, “Photosynthesis” by Yu Chia Chang stands as a testament to the harmonious integration of form and function. The project, awarded Silver in the 2025 A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award, was conceived for a couple and their two children, focusing on maximizing light and space within a 92.5-square-meter apartment. Large windows flood the interiors with daylight, while dark wood grain and minimalist decor evoke a calm, intellectual ambiance. The design’s understated elegance is achieved through the thoughtful use of materials and a restrained color palette of walnut, white, and light gray.

Central to the home’s unique appeal is its innovative approach to spatial challenges. Glass partitions dissolve visual barriers, allowing light to permeate the social areas and reducing any sense of confinement. The kitchen and dining zones are subtly delineated by a low cabinet, fostering connectivity and flexibility. In the children’s room, a bunk bed with integrated drawer stairs and an extended desk maximizes both storage and usability, reflecting Chang’s commitment to practical yet stylish solutions.

Material selection further enhances the residence’s functionality and aesthetic. Polypropylene panels, aluminum, moru glass, and wooden louvers create a tactile and visual richness. Cabinets crafted from KD polypropylene panels require minimal maintenance, while ultra-realistic wood grain printing technology elevates the overall texture. Concealed and sliding lacquered doors contribute to the seamless, uncluttered appearance, emphasizing the sense of spaciousness throughout the home.

Storage is a central theme, ingeniously addressed through vertical integration. The entrance features a floating, full-height cabinet with a rotating shoe rack, tailored to accommodate the couple’s extensive footwear collection. This thoughtful planning extends to the living area, where the entrance cabinet, storage units, and TV wall are unified into a single, cohesive structure. The study, enclosed by glass, offers a quiet retreat without sacrificing connection to the main living spaces, embodying the project’s ethos of openness and interaction.

“Photosynthesis” draws its name from the interplay of light and transparency, with glass and expansive windows serving as conduits for natural illumination. The use of pastel wood and white tones fosters tranquility, while curved edging techniques soften lines and introduce a gentle rhythm. The result is a home that not only meets the practical demands of modern family life but also provides a serene refuge from the bustle of daily routines.

This award-winning design by Yu Chia Chang exemplifies how thoughtful architecture and interior design can transform limited space into a luminous, welcoming environment, setting a new standard for contemporary family residences.
