Cornerstone: A Dark-Hued Sanctuary of Modern Living

Ryan Tien of RT Interior Design has transformed a 280.9 square meter apartment into a striking example of contemporary residential artistry. Drawing inspiration from the client’s desire for a living space with a unique personality, the design employs expansive black surfaces and layered artistic paint to create dramatic contrasts. The seamless TV wall, finished with stone-like artistic paint, stands as a central feature, offering both visual unity and a sense of grandeur. This approach not only satisfies the client’s aesthetic preferences but also establishes a distinctive atmosphere and depth of field within the home.

The residence’s layout is meticulously tailored to the lifestyles of its occupants. Dynamic fluidity is achieved through the interplay of ceiling, floor, and wall treatments, resulting in a visually engaging environment. Notably, the streamlined entrance and dining room storage cabinet serve dual purposes: they provide functional storage while softening the volume’s edges. The open study room, elevated on a raised platform, offers multiple vantage points, allowing residents to enjoy shifting views of the surrounding scenery. Throughout the space, dark-colored materials foster a sense of stability and calm.

Material innovation is central to the project’s realization. The living room’s TV wall, a focal point for both daily life and entertaining, features artistic paint that mimics natural stone, reducing visual fatigue and enhancing the room’s grandeur. In the dining area, the ceiling is finished with stucco paint, creating an uneven texture that acts as both a visual divider and a spatial axis. This solution cleverly addresses structural challenges, such as an intrusive ceiling beam, by turning them into design highlights.

Spatial organization is another hallmark of the project. Social and private zones are clearly delineated, with storage cabinets and stylized vistas separating the entryway from the main living areas. The unobstructed artistic vista allows natural light to stream in, making a strong first impression on visitors. Subtle transitions between the living room, dining room, and study are achieved through variations in floor and ceiling materials, guiding movement and defining each area without the need for physical barriers.

Cornerstone’s design philosophy is rooted in the belief that dark spaces can be expressive and dynamic. The interplay of light and shadow across stone and metal finishes creates a mysterious yet inviting ambiance. Long horizontal lines and contrasting colors add depth, while carefully curated audio-visual equipment and metallic accents reflect the owner’s refined taste. The project’s success is underscored by the client’s satisfaction, particularly regarding improved storage solutions and the innovative study room layout, which allows for comfortable work and leisure without sacrificing views or connectivity.
