Located in the bay area of Kaohsiung, Port draws inspiration from the universal longing for freedom, much like a ship seeking refuge in a harbor. The residence’s design prioritizes both comfort and elegance, employing a sophisticated black palette that highlights the breathtaking views of the sea and sky. Large windows frame the harbor, transforming the ever-changing maritime scenery into a living artwork within the home.
The layout is meticulously planned to accommodate gatherings, with the intention of hosting family and friends for extended stays. The original two-bedroom configuration was reimagined to create three bedrooms, ensuring ample space for guests. Functional zones—including a welcoming entryway, a spacious living room, a convivial dining area, and a versatile bar—are seamlessly integrated, fostering a sense of openness and hospitality.
Innovative construction techniques address the structural challenges posed by low beams and prominent columns. Rather than capping the ceiling, a combination of grilles and flat nail ceilings preserves the home’s vertical space. The use of black mirrors beneath beams further enhances the sense of height, while the dark color scheme subtly retracts, drawing the eye outward toward the harbor views.
Interaction within the home is thoughtfully orchestrated. The dining table and bar are positioned at opposite ends of the living area, creating three distinct reception spaces. This arrangement caters to the owners’ preferences for entertaining—one favoring lively gatherings at the dining table, the other enjoying more intimate moments at the bar. The design thus supports both communal and private experiences, enhancing the home’s versatility as a holiday retreat.
Research and ingenuity are evident in the approach to space division. Instead of traditional brick walls, wardrobes serve as room dividers, providing both storage and sound insulation. This solution maximizes usable space and maintains a sense of openness, while also addressing acoustic privacy for the bedrooms.
To counterbalance the cool, industrial feel of the black tones and iron elements, gentle curves are introduced throughout the décor. These arcs soften the overall environment, infusing the space with warmth and a welcoming atmosphere. The result is a harmonious blend of strength and softness, where architectural rigor meets the calming influence of the sea.
Port stands as a testament to Chu Chieh Liang’s expertise, earning a Silver A' Design Award in 2025 for its creative vision and technical excellence. The home not only offers a luxurious escape but also embodies the spirit of freedom and connection, making every stay a memorable experience.
