Charm House: Minimalist Living with Curves and Light

Louis Liu’s award-winning residence redefines modern comfort in Taiwan

Charm House stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design in compact urban living. Conceived by Louis Liu and completed in February 2024 in Taiwan, this residence reimagines a long, narrow apartment for a modern family of three. The project’s inspiration stems from the site’s challenging layout, which originally featured sharp corners and a fragmented flow. Liu addressed these issues by dividing spaces with block forms and softening angles using rounded corners, resulting in a harmonious, continuous environment. The palette of gray and white, accented by light tones, creates a fresh and airy ambiance, while a strategic mix of closed and open cabinetry ensures both ample storage and visual clarity.

What sets Charm House apart is its inventive approach to multifunctionality and spatial definition. The L-shaped entryway cabinet not only serves as a partition but also provides generous storage and display options, subtly delineating the entry, reading area, and bathroom. Frosted glass panels introduce semi-transparency, enhancing natural light and addressing Feng-Shui considerations. Reflective, semi-suspended cabinets and widened corridors—measuring 160 cm—further amplify the sense of openness and ease of movement, even when the dining area is in full use.

The realization of this design relies on a curated selection of materials, including laminate flooring, rounded wood and system cabinets, titanium-plated metal, and both transparent and frosted glass. The entryway features a screen crafted from frosted glass and a slender titanium-coated frame, reducing visual bulk and welcoming guests with a sense of lightness. In the reading area, folded metal shelves replace traditional bookcases, their brushed titanium finish adding a subtle sheen that enlivens the neutral backdrop.

Functionality remains at the heart of Charm House. The design anticipates daily routines, ensuring seamless transitions from the moment residents enter—switching on lights, storing keys, or changing shoes. The kitchen, dining, and reading zones are interconnected by a thoughtfully designed hallway, with a new bar and L-shaped bookshelf enhancing both utility and leisure. A flexible space outside the master bedroom serves as a music room or yoga area, reflecting the home’s adaptability to evolving family needs.

Underlying the project is a deep respect for the apartment’s history and the current owners’ lifestyle. While the original layout and key fixtures were preserved, outdated finishes were replaced to better align with contemporary tastes. The removal of a redundant storage room enabled the creation of a categorized storage system tailored to the residents’ habits. The result is a cohesive, light-filled home that fosters both organization and togetherness, as evidenced by the extended bar area that encourages social interaction and family unity.

Charm House’s innovative approach has not gone unnoticed. Awarded Bronze in the A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2025, the project exemplifies best practices in art, science, and technology. By merging technical skill with creative vision, Louis Liu’s design not only elevates quality of life for its inhabitants but also sets a benchmark for modern residential architecture.
