Tranquil Mist: Curved Serenity in Retirement Living

Tranquil Mist stands as a testament to thoughtful residential design tailored for the evolving needs of retirees. Chien Hwan Wang drew inspiration from the couple’s desire for a slower, simpler lifestyle, using gentle curves and natural elements to foster a sense of calm. Curved walls and ceilings guide the eye and movement, creating a seamless flow that mirrors the tranquility of clouds and mist in the mountains. This approach not only enhances aesthetic appeal but also supports the couple’s daily routines, ensuring both comfort and functionality.

One of the home’s most distinctive features is the integration of custom plaster lamps that echo the ceiling’s curves. These stalactite-inspired fixtures, paired with recessed lighting, dissolve traditional boundaries and amplify natural brightness. The interplay of light and form blurs the line between interior and exterior, allowing the lush greenery outside to become part of the living experience. Horizontally and vertically extending curves cleverly conceal ceiling beams, smoothing transitions and minimizing visual clutter.

The material palette is carefully curated to promote serenity and sophistication. Mamo stone, braided carpet, curved molding boards, and glass tiles are combined with environmentally friendly water-based latex paint and rattan weaving. The color scheme features low-saturation blues, grays, and whites, avoiding bold contrasts in favor of a restful, neutral ambiance. This pastel approach aligns with the couple’s preference for understated elegance, making the space both visually soothing and inviting.

Spatial planning was a significant challenge due to the apartment’s original four-room configuration and fixed kitchen and bathroom locations. Drawing on principles from Japanese senior housing, the designer reimagined the layout to maximize flexibility and accessibility. A key innovation is the double master bedroom, where closets create a loop-like circulation, allowing the couple to choose between shared or private sleeping areas. This arrangement supports independent lifestyles while maintaining a strong sense of connection.

The project’s success is reflected in the residents’ satisfaction with their new environment. The circulation plan and dual master bedroom offer freedom and privacy, while the open-plan design ensures abundant natural light and ventilation. Tranquil Mist exemplifies how design can support a fulfilling retirement, blending beauty, practicality, and a deep connection to nature. As a winner of the Iron A' Design Award in 2025, the project demonstrates industry-leading innovation and sensitivity to the unique needs of senior living.
