For Angel Cupid: A Curved Sanctuary for Modern Living

Chang Chi Pei crafts a luminous, smart home for newlyweds in Taiwan

Designed by Chang Chi Pei, "For Angel Cupid" transforms a once-dark residence into a bright, welcoming haven, blending innovative smart technology with gentle curves and thoughtful zoning to suit the lifestyle of a young couple.

The project, completed in February 2024 in Taiwan, reimagines a 132.2 square meter space for a newlywed couple who enjoy hosting gatherings. Inspired by the couple's personalities and social habits, the design employs warm, light tones and soft lighting to create a cozy yet sophisticated atmosphere. Flowing lines and subtle dividers distinguish social areas from private retreats, allowing for seamless entertaining while maintaining privacy. Curved elements throughout the home symbolize the sweetness of new beginnings and soften the transition between spaces.

One of the most distinctive features is the transformation of the previously dark, musty interior. Chang Chi Pei replaced heavy walnut tones with light-colored lacquer finishes, enhancing natural brightness. Rounded edges replaced sharp angles, and the strategic use of glass partitions enables both openness and separation. The dining area was converted into a computer room with transparent dividers, catering to the couple's need for entertainment and work-from-home flexibility. A voice-controlled smart home system, complete with customizable lighting scenes, elevates convenience and comfort.

Material selection plays a pivotal role in the design’s unique character. The social area features marble with a chiseled finish, preserving the stone’s natural texture and grain while offering a subtle gloss. The entrance is marked by floor tiles with a fireworks-like pattern, creating a warm, inviting welcome. Ironwork, wooden cabinetry, laminate flooring, and stone veneer further contribute to the tactile richness of the space. Each quarter-circle transition in the corners gently extends sightlines, subtly enhancing privacy and visual flow.

The project’s technical execution presented several challenges. Integrating the smart home system required meticulous rewiring and a focus on safety. Installing curved glass elements in the social area demanded precise measurements to ensure perfect alignment, while the application of stone paint on load-bearing walls required patience and careful layering to achieve the desired texture. These efforts resulted in a harmonious blend of technology and craftsmanship, tailored to the couple’s needs.

"For Angel Cupid" stands as a testament to thoughtful residential design, where innovation meets intimacy. The residence not only fulfills the functional requirements of modern living but also provides a sanctuary that reflects the owners’ personalities and aspirations. Recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in 2025, the project exemplifies how design can create both fulfillment and positive feelings, contributing to a better world.
