Monochrome House: Modern Living in Black and White

Charmilles Zhao crafts a sophisticated family residence in Yunlin, Taiwan

Monochrome House by Charmilles Zhao redefines modern residential design, blending functionality and elegance within a carefully curated palette of black, gray, white, and wood. Awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2025, this project demonstrates how thoughtful planning and material selection can create a luxurious atmosphere on a limited budget.

Monochrome House, a 224-square-meter, three-story home in Yunlin, Taiwan, stands as a testament to the power of minimalist design. Charmilles Zhao drew inspiration from the homeowners’ desire for a modern aesthetic, utilizing clean lines and a monochromatic color scheme to establish a striking yet inviting environment. The design incorporates art paint, grilles, fabric, and black glass, resulting in a harmonious blend of textures that elevate the everyday living experience.

The ground floor features a clever spatial division, with the public area split into front and rear zones according to the position of the roof beam. This approach allows for the creation of a custom L-shaped kitchen and a multi-functional room, tailored to the family’s needs. The kitchen’s aluminum sliding door enables seamless transitions between open and closed configurations, fostering both privacy and connectivity. An expanded countertop doubles as a bar and dining area, enhancing interaction between the kitchen and dining spaces.

Innovative solutions address architectural challenges, such as the intrusive roof beam running through the aisle. By transforming the space beneath the beam into a storage area with iron hangers and systematic cabinets, the design not only eliminates spatial discomfort but also introduces practical dressing zones within the master bedroom. This reimagining of structural elements exemplifies the project’s commitment to both form and function.

Material selection plays a crucial role in achieving a sense of light luxury. Glass elements are strategically integrated, from black mirrors accenting the main bed’s background wall to glass handles on cabinetry. To maintain high visual quality within budget constraints, art paint and wood panels replace more expensive thin sheets on feature walls. The TV wall, adorned with pearlescent art paint and hand-drawn patterns, exudes understated opulence.

The project, completed in March 2024 after four months of meticulous work, reflects a deep understanding of contemporary family living. Each floor is thoughtfully arranged: communal spaces on the first, the master suite on the second, and children’s rooms on the third. The result is a cohesive home that balances aesthetic ambition with everyday practicality, earning recognition for its innovative approach and technical excellence.

Monochrome House exemplifies how creative problem-solving and material innovation can transform residential architecture. Charmilles Zhao’s design not only fulfills the homeowners’ aspirations but also sets a benchmark for modern living spaces that are both beautiful and functional.
