Unpolished Light stands as a testament to the evolving needs of contemporary families. The project, completed in October 2022, centers on a family of four and their desire for a home that fosters togetherness without sacrificing privacy or style. Chia-Chi Yeh’s approach began with an in-depth understanding of the family’s routines, leading to a reimagined layout that prioritizes shared spaces. By removing the kitchen partition, shortening the entryway, and recessing the master bedroom, the design expands the social area, creating a seamless environment where family members naturally gather.
One of the most distinctive features of this residence is its clever use of light and space. Natural light floods the interiors, enhanced by a palette of neutral tones and a thoughtful mix of materials. Marble on the TV wall introduces a touch of luxury, while engineered hardwood flooring ensures comfort and durability, especially for the family’s two young daughters. The kitchen, fitted with Italian tiles, combines elegance with practicality, offering easy maintenance and safety.
Storage, often a challenge in compact apartments, is ingeniously addressed. Cabinets flank the entryway, providing ample space for shoes and essentials without encroaching on the living area. The daughters’ rooms are carefully balanced in size, connected by a 45-degree angled corridor that eliminates wasted space and maximizes accessibility. Sloped ceilings in these rooms not only solve height constraints but also add a whimsical, airy character, making the private zones as inviting as the communal ones.
Technical challenges, such as the low ceiling height, were met with innovative solutions. A long air outlet was integrated into the ceiling to discreetly house the air conditioning system, maintaining both functionality and visual harmony. This attention to detail ensures that every element serves both an aesthetic and practical purpose, contributing to the overall sense of openness and comfort.
The result is a home that embodies the essence of ‘home’—a place where design and daily life intersect seamlessly. The open study, kitchen, and dining areas each offer a personal retreat while remaining visually connected, encouraging spontaneous family interactions. The project’s success is underscored by its recognition with a Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, celebrating its creative ingenuity and positive impact on quality of life.
Unpolished Light demonstrates how thoughtful design can transform constraints into opportunities, creating a living space that is both functional and inspiring. Chia-Chi Yeh’s vision offers a blueprint for modern family living, where openness, warmth, and innovation coexist in perfect balance.
