Inspired by a client from the tech industry, Flowing Diffusion stands as a testament to the power of geometric forms and metallic finishes in contemporary home design. The residence’s open-plan layout connects the living and dining spaces, fostering a sense of inclusivity and enhancing the capacity for entertaining guests. This spatial fluidity is further accentuated by the continuity of lines and the interplay of materials, resulting in a home that is both visually striking and functionally versatile.
One of the most remarkable features is the social area’s ceiling, composed of curved metal and translucent panels. This design not only unifies the living and dining zones but also incorporates color-changing lighting, allowing the ambiance to shift in response to different occasions. The innovative use of ‘side-emitting’ metal introduces a subtle, glowing effect, enriching the textures and hues throughout the space. The titanium-coated metal facade, inspired by the building’s exterior, adds a sculptural quality, transforming the walkway into an artful highlight reminiscent of a gallery installation.
Material selection plays a pivotal role in achieving the residence’s unique character. Titanium-coated metal, metallic paint, and Italian tiles are employed throughout, with large-format tiles in the social areas minimizing seams and reinforcing the sense of openness. Personalized touches, such as abstract-patterned tiles chosen by the owner for key surfaces, infuse the space with individuality and artistic flair. The thoughtful placement of private zones—including two master bedrooms on opposite sides of the apartment—ensures privacy and tranquility for each family member.
The design’s functionality extends beyond aesthetics. A spacious study with a five-meter desk caters to the family’s shared love of reading, while the clear delineation between social and private areas supports harmonious living. Floor-to-ceiling windows and glass sliding doors maximize natural light, enhancing the interplay between the metallic elements and the home’s warm wooden tones. This careful balance of materials and layout creates an environment that is both inviting and sophisticated.
Overcoming technical challenges, such as crafting the curved, layered ceiling and achieving a flawless titanium-coated finish, required exceptional skill and innovation. The use of translucent panels in place of traditional light strips ensures even illumination, while the wavy metallic walkway stands as a testament to the craftsmanship involved. These solutions not only address practical concerns but also elevate the residence’s artistic impact.
Flowing Diffusion, completed in December 2023 in Taiwan, has been recognized with the Silver A' Design Award for its outstanding creativity, technical excellence, and ability to evoke wonder. Chien Chien Peng’s approach demonstrates how innovative materials and thoughtful design can transform a residence into a living work of art, setting a new standard for modern luxury homes.
