Shellmine Kids: Eco-Friendly Tableware for a Greener Future

Innovative eggshell-based tableware teaches children about sustainability.

Shellmine Kids by Yohei Murai reimagines children’s tableware using eggshell-based biomass resin, blending environmental consciousness with playful design to inspire sustainable choices from an early age.

Shellmine Kids is a groundbreaking tableware set designed specifically for infants and toddlers, created by Yohei Murai in collaboration with Fukui Craft, a pioneer in Japanese commercial tableware. The project responds to the growing global concern over plastic waste by introducing a unique material—biomass resin made from eggshells. This innovative approach not only reduces environmental impact but also addresses the challenges of cost and consumer perception in the plastic tableware market.

Unlike conventional plastic tableware, Shellmine Kids stands out through its visible use of eggshell resin, highlighted by a charming chick motif. The mixture of white and brown eggshells is intentionally exposed, making the material’s origin clear at a glance. This design choice encourages consumers to recognize and value the eco-friendly nature of the product, transforming a simple purchase into a conscious decision for the planet’s future.

Technologically, the tableware is composed of 57% eggshells and has earned the Japanese Biomass Mark 55. The patented manufacturing process results in a material with a specific gravity similar to ceramics, offering both durability and crack resistance. Notably, Shellmine Kids tableware reduces CO2 emissions by 37% and petroleum-derived components by 44% compared to standard resin alternatives, contributing significantly to a recycling-oriented society.

Functionality is at the heart of the design. The set includes plates, bowls, and cups engineered for stability and ease of use by young children. Thicker bases lower the center of gravity, making the pieces harder to tip over, while undulating surfaces improve grip. Insights from a survey of over 120 parents influenced the design, ensuring the pieces are dishwasher-safe and easy to clean—features highly valued by families.

Shellmine Kids also addresses the lifecycle of children’s tableware. Recognizing that such items are often discarded as children grow, the design incorporates removable elements and universally comfortable shapes, allowing continued use into adulthood. This thoughtful approach not only extends product life but also reinforces the importance of sustainability and environmental education from an early age.

Celebrated with a Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, Shellmine Kids exemplifies how creativity, research, and responsible material choices can converge to improve quality of life and foster a more sustainable world.
