The Three Kingdoms period, a cornerstone of Chinese history, has inspired countless works of art and literature. Netease Games Art Design Center embarked on a mission to breathe new life into this ancient narrative, drawing from the rich visual language of the Han Dynasty. Through meticulous research, the team explored museum artifacts, focusing on traditional color palettes, textures, and pictographic characters. This foundation enabled the designers to create a brand identity that honors the past while resonating with modern sensibilities.
Central to the project is the use of the "land grid" motif, a nod to strategy gameplay, and the pictographic "Shuai" character, both distilled into a distinctive square graphic. The palette—black, red, and white—echoes popular Han Dynasty hues, while flat calligraphic brushstrokes and modern typography add a contemporary touch. This approach not only preserves cultural authenticity but also ensures the design appeals to younger and international audiences.
Infinite Borders stands out for its adaptability across digital and physical media. The systematic, flat design allows seamless application to digital posters, UI interfaces, and merchandise, maintaining visual consistency and ease of extension for designers. This versatility is crucial for a brand aiming to reach a global audience and adapt to various platforms.
The creative process was not without challenges. Balancing historical accuracy with modern trends required careful consideration, especially when integrating gameplay elements into the visual system. The team’s solution was to extract core symbols and colors from the Three Kingdoms era, merging them with contemporary design principles to form a unique and recognizable brand identity.
This innovative approach has garnered significant recognition. Infinite Borders was awarded the Golden A' Design Award in 2025, a testament to its outstanding creativity and impact on art, design, and technology. The project exemplifies how thoughtful design can bridge the gap between tradition and innovation, offering fresh cultural experiences to a global audience.
By infusing the Three Kingdoms with new vitality, Netease Games Art Design Center demonstrates the enduring relevance of historical narratives when reinterpreted through the lens of modern design. Infinite Borders serves as a model for how brands can honor their heritage while embracing the future.
