Lo Fang Ming’s design for Belonging addresses the complexities of housing three generations under one roof, a scenario increasingly relevant in contemporary society. The project, located in Taiwan and completed in 2024, reimagines a narrow, low-ceilinged residence into a vibrant, interconnected home. Central to the design is the use of linear grille elements, symbolizing the continuity and expansion of the Eastern family. These lines visually and functionally connect different floors, creating a sense of unity while respecting individual privacy.
Spatial constraints posed significant challenges, with the elongated layout and limited ceiling height demanding creative solutions. Lo Fang Ming utilized mirrored ceilings to reflect light and expand the perceived height, while stained wood veneer parquet and integrated lighting lines add warmth and sophistication. The result is a luminous, open environment that dissolves visual barriers and fosters interaction among family members.
The grille motif is more than an aesthetic choice; it adapts to the diverse needs of each generation. In private areas, it transforms into display units, storage, and partitions, organically integrating with daily routines. This flexible approach ensures that communal spaces remain inviting and connected, while personal zones offer comfort and autonomy. The design also maximizes natural light, enhancing well-being and energy efficiency throughout the 512-square-meter residence.
Research into the family’s lifestyle informed the allocation of spaces for living, sleeping, socializing, working, and reading. The top floor serves as a secondary gathering hub, complete with entertainment amenities and an outdoor terrace, encouraging both togetherness and relaxation. This thoughtful planning reflects a deep understanding of the evolving dynamics within multigenerational households.
Belonging’s innovative approach has earned it the Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, recognizing its blend of technical skill, creativity, and positive impact on quality of life. The project stands as a testament to how thoughtful design can bridge generational divides, turning architectural limitations into opportunities for connection and growth.
By harmonizing tradition with modernity, Lo Fang Ming’s Belonging offers a blueprint for future residential design—one where every generation finds both space and a sense of home.
