Launched in March 2024 in Wuhan, Soul Power II marks a significant evolution from David Tao’s iconic 2003 performance. Rather than simply recreating the past, the concert’s design draws inspiration from the Tower of Babel, symbolizing unity and connection through music. The centerpiece—an 8-meter circular turntable with eight towering columns—serves as a visual metaphor for bringing people together, using “love” as its universal language. This ambitious approach reflects a deep understanding of the artist’s soul, creating a heartfelt and contemporary experience for concert-goers.
The stage’s unique construction stands out for its adaptability and technical prowess. Both the front and back are equipped with LED screens, and the turntable’s angles generate a striking naked-eye 3D effect. Lighting design employs Pixel Line technology, ACME XP-20R, and strobe lights to extend the tower’s presence, while a custom hydraulic system with dual-frame lifts integrates LED screens into the rising structures. These elements combine to amplify the visual impact, especially during dynamic stage transitions.
Musical spontaneity is at the heart of Soul Power II. Many segments are unscripted, allowing the performance to flow organically and respond to the live atmosphere. This flexibility encourages unexpected moments of brilliance between David Tao and his band, immersing the audience in an ever-changing musical journey. Visuals and song choices further enhance this resonance, with playful puns and nostalgic hits like “Runaway,” “Regular Friends,” and “Blue Moon” fostering a deep connection with fans of all ages.
Overcoming technical challenges was central to the project’s success. Most venues lacked overhead rigging, prompting the design team to construct all components from the ground up. Irregular Layher structures support the LED screens, while smoke machines and mirror balls within the tower add depth and drama to the visual effects. This innovative approach not only maintains the tower’s prominence but also maximizes the stage’s lighting and design potential.
Soul Power II’s impact has been recognized with the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in Performing Arts, Stage, Style, and Scenery Design for 2025. The concert’s fusion of art, technology, and emotional storytelling sets a new benchmark for live performances, demonstrating how thoughtful design can transform a concert into a powerful, unifying experience.
As Soul Power II continues its global tour, it stands as a testament to the enduring power of live music and the limitless possibilities of stage innovation, inviting audiences everywhere to rediscover the magic of collective artistry.
