Inspired by the flowing waters and temporal shifts of Yuejin Port, Infinite Wave captures the essence of movement and transformation. The installation’s form draws from the Mobius strip, symbolizing infinity and continuity. Crafted from interwoven optical fibers, the structure turns intangible light into a physical medium, allowing visitors to witness the passage of time as light diffuses and shifts throughout the day and night.
One of the installation’s most distinctive features is its ability to change appearance as natural and artificial light interact. During the day, sunlight gently illuminates the pavilion, while at night, artificial lighting and emerging moonlight create a dramatic display. Crimson rays reminiscent of blood gradually sharpen the contours of the structure, transitioning from a soft blur to striking clarity. This interplay guides viewers through an evolving spatial experience, highlighting the relationship between light, time, and perception.
Chao Lin Cheng utilized advanced computational design tools and three-dimensional laser cutting technology to realize Infinite Wave. Each optical fiber was precisely measured and positioned, ensuring the accurate assembly of the complex structure. The integration of local manufacturing technologies not only showcases Taiwan’s industrial capabilities but also fosters a deeper connection between art and community.
The interactive nature of Infinite Wave encourages exploration and introspection. As visitors move through the pavilion, multidimensional light waves intertwine, creating an illusion of infinite pathways. The shifting light guides and disorients, prompting a journey from uncertainty to clarity—a metaphor for the human experience of navigating time and space.
Exhibited from January to March 2024 in Tainan, Infinite Wave stands as a testament to the power of design to merge art, technology, and local culture. The project’s recognition with the Bronze A' Lighting Projects and Light Art Design Award in 2025 underscores its creative ingenuity and contribution to enhancing quality of life through innovative design.
Infinite Wave exemplifies how contemporary lighting installations can transcend mere functionality, offering immersive experiences that connect viewers to the rhythms of nature and the passage of time. Chao Lin Cheng’s work not only illuminates spaces but also invites reflection on the ever-changing interplay between light, environment, and human perception.
