Counterpoint Poetry: Harmonizing Tradition and Modern Living

Hsin Ting’s countryside retreat blends Chinese heritage with contemporary design.

Counterpoint Poetry, designed by Hsin Ting, reimagines rural living by fusing traditional Chinese architectural concepts with modern sensibilities, creating a space that honors heritage while supporting contemporary lifestyles.

Set amidst the tranquil farmlands of Changhua City, Taiwan, Counterpoint Poetry stands as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of rationality and sensibility. The project marks a second-generation return to agricultural roots, with the design drawing inspiration from the Mandala Chart and the iconic blend of Western and Chinese traditions found in Wang Da-hung’s Hong Ying Apartment. Hsin Ting’s approach emphasizes a modern yet grounded interpretation of these influences, resulting in a home that feels both timeless and relevant.

The 121-square-meter residence is defined by its three-section compound layout, where 1980s beams and columns form square, orderly walls. Earthy browns dominate the palette, symbolizing the fruitfulness of the soil, while an emerald green accent wall in the main living area reflects the unity and shared purpose of the family. In the dining area, golden leaves cascade from the ceiling, mirroring the surrounding fields and introducing a sense of organic artistry to the space. Marble veining in the western servery and layered spatial details further reinforce the home’s narrative depth and visual intrigue.

Functionality and cultural symbolism are carefully balanced throughout the design. Feng Shui principles guided the spatial arrangement, resulting in a master bedroom separated from the walk-in closet and bathroom. Instead, a quiet computer room was prioritized, complete with a futon for relaxation, reflecting the young homeowner’s practical needs. The use of darker textures and harmonious tones evokes the essence of Chinese culture, while the overall layout maintains the integrity of the traditional nine-square grid pattern, a hallmark of classic courtyard houses.

Research into traditional architectural forms informed the project’s unique traffic flow, with winding paths and storage walls serving both practical and aesthetic purposes. These elements conceal clutter and enhance the sense of grandeur, embodying the spirit of elegant, layered narratives. The central placement of core spaces fosters a sense of inward focus and interconnectedness, addressing both the technical challenges of existing plumbing and the cultural requirements of Feng Shui.

Counterpoint Poetry has garnered recognition for its innovative approach, earning a Bronze A' Design Award in 2025 for Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design. The project exemplifies best practices in art, science, and design, contributing to quality of life improvements and setting a benchmark for future rural residences that seek to bridge the gap between tradition and modernity.

By integrating Chinese architectural wisdom with contemporary needs, Hsin Ting’s Counterpoint Poetry offers a compelling model for sustainable, meaningful living—one where personal history and functional utility are in perfect balance.
