Crabee: Transforming Water Safety for Children Through Play

Interactive flotation device by Chih-Yun Li makes swimming lessons fun and safe

Crabee, designed by Chih-Yun Li, reimagines children's swimming aids by merging interactive play with essential water safety, addressing a critical global need for drowning prevention among young learners.

Every year, drowning claims the lives of approximately 370,000 people worldwide, with children under 18 accounting for 60% of these fatalities, according to the World Health Organization. Recognizing the heightened risk for children who fear water, Crabee was developed to reduce anxiety and foster confidence in aquatic environments. The design draws on insights from swimming instructors and child development research, emphasizing the importance of early, positive water experiences.

Crabee stands out with its modular shell design, allowing children aged 3 to 9 to customize their flotation device. This adaptability not only accommodates different body sizes but also introduces playful elements that encourage exploration and social interaction. Accessories such as periscopes and floating balls invite children of varying swimming abilities to participate together, transforming swimming lessons into engaging group activities.

The construction of Crabee utilizes EVA foam for the main body and rings, ensuring durability, water resistance, and safety. The periscope components are crafted from PP and PC plastics using advanced injection molding techniques, resulting in robust and optically clear accessories. The thoughtful material selection addresses previous challenges with PVC and PP, which proved less durable and more difficult to manufacture with intricate designs.

Functionality is at the heart of Crabee’s design. Children can adjust the conical tube body for a secure fit, stack or toss rings to simulate a crab finding its shell, and use periscopes to observe underwater life while remaining safely at the surface. Floating and sinking gems add a treasure hunt element, further enhancing engagement and learning. These features are grounded in research that integrates parental feedback, child development benchmarks, and playful storytelling to motivate young swimmers.

The project, initiated in June 2023 and scheduled for launch in mid-2025, has already garnered recognition, winning Bronze at the A' Toys, Games and Hobby Products Design Award in 2025. This accolade highlights Crabee’s innovative approach, technical excellence, and contribution to improving quality of life by making water safety education accessible and enjoyable for children.

Crabee exemplifies how thoughtful design can address pressing safety concerns while nurturing children's curiosity and confidence in the water. As it prepares for expert testing and market introduction, Crabee promises to set a new standard for interactive learning aids in aquatic environments, potentially reducing childhood drowning rates and fostering a lifelong love of swimming.
