Located in Huangge Town, Guangzhou, Ferrying stands as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of past and present. The design channels the spirit of Nansha’s traditional river villages, where boats once served as lifelines and Western architectural influences remain visible. The bookstore’s spatial organization mimics an abstract water town, connecting areas for books, shopping, and cultural salons through elements like miniature bridges, village houses, octagonal pavilions, and even a pixelated Qilin—a mythical beast revered in local folklore.
What sets Ferrying apart is its seamless integration of local heritage with modern amenities. Contemporary features such as AR experiences, a subway-themed children’s area, and modern tea offerings are thoughtfully woven into the traditional fabric. The children’s zone, inspired by subway trains and constructed with parametrically generated steel lines, encourages exploration and play, while parents enjoy a tranquil space for reading or work. This dynamic interplay of old and new creates a unique environment that appeals to all ages.
Despite a modest construction budget, the design utilizes exposed ceilings and locally sourced materials like cement, terrazzo, clay bricks, and granite to evoke authenticity. Prefabricated steel structures and factory-assembled components, such as the white arch book corridor and wooden boat display stands, exemplify cost-effective innovation. The octagonal pavilion, featuring a mortise and tenon structure and indirect lighting, bridges traditional craftsmanship with contemporary aesthetics.
Ferrying’s design is rooted in extensive community research. Field surveys and qualitative data analysis revealed residents’ desire for a space that preserves cultural traditions while fostering relaxation, creativity, and social interaction. The bookstore’s layout supports diverse activities, from literature and art salons to workshops and parent-child engagement, enhancing the quality of community life. Book selections focus on literature, science, psychology, art, and children’s interests, catering to a wide audience.
Technical and creative challenges were met with ingenuity. The octagonal pavilion required a modern reinterpretation to suit the community’s evolving identity, while the children’s area demanded precise parametric design to ensure safety and engagement for various age groups. These solutions highlight the designers’ commitment to balancing tradition, innovation, and practical constraints.
Ferrying has quickly become a beloved “literary living room” for Nansha residents, offering an elegant, welcoming space that celebrates both heritage and progress. Awarded Silver in the 2025 A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award, the project exemplifies how thoughtful design can elevate everyday experiences and foster a sense of belonging within a community.
