Tjeld Bar stands as a testament to the harmonious union of nature and modernity, drawing inspiration from the beloved Norwegian oystercatcher bird and the scenic waterfront of Tjuvholmen. The design’s essence lies in its ability to evoke the atmosphere of the sea coast through carefully selected materials—marble, wood, and gleaming metals—while incorporating vibrant accents reminiscent of the bird’s distinctive eyes and beak. Smooth, organic lines throughout the interior echo the forms of oysters and shells, reinforcing the connection to the coastal landscape.
A defining feature of Tjeld Bar is its commitment to sustainability and innovation. The project utilizes EON Clay Plaster, a unique blend of unfired clays, minerals, river sand, and herbs, providing healthy, breathable finishes for walls and ceilings. This natural clay plaster is non-toxic, low in VOC emissions, and free from synthetic additives, requiring minimal energy and producing zero waste during manufacturing. Acoustic challenges are addressed with panels crafted from recycled, bio-based composites of flax and hemp, ensuring a serene and eco-conscious environment.
Ergonomics and guest interaction are central to the bar’s layout. The bar station’s central placement allows staff to greet guests immediately and provide attentive service to every table, enhancing the overall experience. Innovative features such as sensor-activated doors for the dishwasher room and a discreetly hidden staff area further streamline operations, reflecting a thoughtful approach to both functionality and hospitality.
The design process was deeply rooted in cultural and environmental research, examining the symbolism of the Tjeld bird and the architectural character of Tjuvholmen. This research-driven approach resulted in a space that not only tells a story but also fosters a meaningful connection between guests and their surroundings. The bold red column at the heart of the bar, symbolizing the oystercatcher’s beak, elegantly separates the cocktail and oyster stations, serving as both a visual anchor and a nod to the bird’s presence.
Spanning 90 square meters and accommodating up to 40 guests, Tjeld Bar exemplifies how narrative, culture, and sustainability can be seamlessly woven into contemporary hospitality design. Its recognition with the Silver A' Design Award in 2025 underscores the project’s technical excellence, artistic vision, and positive impact on both the local community and the broader design field.
Tjeld Bar invites patrons to experience a unique blend of artistry and environmental consciousness, setting a new standard for how interior spaces can reflect and celebrate their natural and cultural context.
