Located in a collaborative workshop environment, Zeit–los stands as a testament to the power of design to shape perception and foster creativity. Responsive Spaces conceived this spatial light installation to address profound questions about time—its value, its use, and its presence within daily life. Drawing inspiration from the emotional resonance of time, the installation visually interprets temporal themes, seamlessly integrating with the architectural elements of its host space.
The installation comprises 18 LED light tubes, suspended with custom steel cable mounts, forming a striking 3.5 by 3.5-meter grid. This arrangement echoes the familiar rhythm of a ticking clock, while also referencing the unique spatial features of the client’s premises. Zeit–los offers four distinct visual modes—time, sign, stop, and plan—each accessible and customizable via a mobile application. Users can adjust colors, timings, and even display real-time weather data, making the installation both a functional tool and an artistic centerpiece.
Responsive Spaces approached the technical realization of Zeit–los with a focus on flexibility and user empowerment. The mobile app interface allows anyone in the space to interact with the installation, selecting modes that suit the occasion—whether tracking working hours, setting a countdown for collaborative tasks, or providing a dynamic backdrop for events. The abstract pixel arrangement of the LED tubes enables innovative visualizations, moving beyond traditional displays to create a unique spatial experience.
Research and development for Zeit–los centered on the challenge of representing time in a non-linear, visually engaging manner. The design team experimented with unconventional pixel resolutions and arrangements, ultimately crafting an installation that is both unobtrusive and maximally usable. The result is a generative light artwork that adapts to the needs of its users, embodying the spirit of innovation and collaboration that defines its environment.
Recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, Zeit–los exemplifies excellence in interactive, experiential, and immersive design. Its blend of art, science, and technology not only enhances the quality of life within its space but also sets a new standard for how time can be visualized and experienced in contemporary environments.
By inviting users to engage with the passage of time in a tangible, customizable way, Zeit–los encourages a deeper appreciation for the moments that shape collective creativity and productivity.
