The Glory Of Jun Hun 1975: Reviving Wartime Heritage

Immersive art transforms a Cold War power plant into a cultural beacon

Taiwan Power Company’s restoration of the Bei Gan Power Plant, unveiled during the Matsu International Art Island, merges art and history to honor the resilience of a community shaped by conflict and peace.

The Glory Of Jun Hun 1975 stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Matsu Islands, where the past and present converge through innovative cultural preservation. Taiwan Power Company, in collaboration with leading artists and designers, has transformed the historic Bei Gan Power Plant—originally commissioned in 1975—into an immersive art experience. This project not only commemorates the lifting of martial law in Matsu after three decades but also invites visitors to reflect on the challenges of wartime power supply and the value of peace.

Distinctive lighting by YI.ng Lighting Design Consultants and evocative soundscapes by musician Yu-Jun Wang set the stage for a sensory journey. Three groups of dancers, performing as time travelers, guide audiences through the power plant’s tunnel structure, where vintage German explosion-proof lamps cast a nostalgic glow. The integration of recorded generator sounds from the Nan-Gan Power Plant, along with the reactivation of original MAN GmbH generators, recreates the thunderous ambiance of the plant’s operational era, immersing visitors in a vivid reimagining of the Cold War period.

The project’s technical realization required meticulous attention to both artistic vision and structural integrity. The 237-square-meter, two-floor tunnel space posed significant challenges due to its deteriorated steel frame and derelict condition. The design team prioritized preservation, ensuring that all interventions were non-destructive and respectful of the site’s historical fabric. Safety upgrades enabled the hosting of live performances, while the unique architectural features of the tunnel were highlighted rather than concealed.

Extensive field research underpinned the project’s authenticity. The creative team conducted on-site studies to capture the essence of Matsu’s local history, environmental sounds, and architectural nuances. These findings were translated into a multi-sensory experience that resonated deeply with the community and visitors alike. The project’s impact is evident in its impressive reach: approximately 27,000 indoor visitors, over 600 media reports, and an estimated audience of 1.28 million people worldwide.

The Glory Of Jun Hun 1975 not only preserves a significant piece of Taiwan’s cultural heritage but also redefines how historical sites can be revitalized through contemporary art. Awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2025, the project exemplifies the integration of best practices in cultural restoration, technical innovation, and community engagement. As the Matsu Islands reflect on their journey from military governance to peaceful celebration, this project stands as a beacon of memory, resilience, and creative renewal.

By illuminating the dust-covered past with artistry and care, Taiwan Power Company’s initiative invites audiences to step into history, fostering a deeper appreciation for the sacrifices and triumphs that have shaped the present. The Glory Of Jun Hun 1975 is a powerful reminder of the transformative potential of art in preserving and reimagining cultural heritage for future generations.
