Ken 14 stands out as the first beer in China crafted entirely from domestic raw materials, with its packaging drawing inspiration from the expansive barley fields of Hulunbuir. The design employs a palette of white, green, and golden hues to symbolize the barley’s journey from seedling to maturity. This visual narrative invites consumers to experience the vitality and hope of standing amidst a flourishing field, seamlessly connecting the enjoyment of beer with the beauty of nature.
Environmental stewardship is at the core of Ken 14’s packaging. The innovative use of a biobased leather alternative, derived from spent grain and produced without organic solvents, ensures the packaging remains free from odors and harmful substances. Complemented by recyclable kraft paper, biodegradable boxes, and non-woven fabrics, the design embodies the 4R principles—reduce, reuse, recycle, and renew—throughout its lifecycle, reinforcing the brand’s commitment to sustainability.
Visually, the packaging pays homage to the style of traditional Chinese newspapers, offering a nostalgic yet modern reading experience. This thoughtful layout not only enhances the product’s upscale image but also fosters a deeper emotional and cultural connection between consumers and the Ken 14 brand. The tactile paper texture and interactive elements further elevate the unboxing experience, making each encounter with the product memorable.
Ken 14’s creation was driven by a desire to support China’s domestic barley industry and promote harmonious coexistence between people and nature. The design team, led by Qiguang Zhou, Celine Zhou, Yan Yang, and Xiaoxue Fu, overcame significant challenges in material innovation and production optimization to achieve both aesthetic and environmental goals. Their efforts have resulted in packaging that is as meaningful as it is sustainable, resonating with consumers who value both quality and responsibility.
Launched in December 2024, Ken 14 has already garnered international acclaim, winning the Silver A' Packaging Design Award in 2025. This recognition highlights the design’s technical excellence, artistic skill, and its ability to inspire positive feelings and wonder. Ken 14 sets a new benchmark for beer packaging, demonstrating how thoughtful design can bridge tradition, innovation, and environmental consciousness.
Ken 14’s packaging not only protects and presents the product but also tells a compelling story—one that encourages consumers to appreciate nature and embrace sustainable choices in their daily lives.
