Nong Li: Ancient Elegance in Modern Beer Packaging

Celebrating Yangshao Culture Through Innovative Design and Brewing

Nong Li by China Resources Snow Breweries redefines beer packaging, blending ancient Chinese artistry with contemporary innovation to honor tradition and elevate the drinking experience.

Nong Li stands as a testament to the enduring influence of Chinese brewing culture, drawing inspiration from the Yangshao Culture’s iconic Shuang Er Ni Yu (salamander fish) patterned pottery vessel. The design pays homage to the region’s rich heritage, with every detail—from the bottle’s silhouette to its intricate geometric patterns—reflecting a reverence for history. The cap, adorned with illustrations of a genteel four-step toast ritual, invites drinkers to participate in a journey through ancient etiquette, making each sip a celebration of tradition and artistry.

Distinctive in both form and function, Nong Li’s packaging sets itself apart through the integration of classical art and innovative brewing techniques. The recipe draws on the ancient grain fermentation method known as Nie Zao, further rooting the product in the legacy of Chinese craftsmanship. The bottle’s dark hue, achieved through a blend of black pottery and glass, not only evokes a sense of timelessness but also serves a practical purpose by protecting the beer from light and temperature changes, ensuring optimal flavor preservation.

Functionality meets aesthetics in Nong Li’s design. The geometric patterns etched onto the bottle provide both visual appeal and a secure, slip-free grip. Presented in an elegant gift box alongside traditional Gu drinking vessels, the packaging transforms the act of gifting or hosting into an immersive cultural experience. The cap’s narrative illustrations of the toast ritual—taste, offer, respond, and reciprocate—invite users to engage with the rich tapestry of Chinese drinking customs.

The creation of Nong Li involved extensive research into the Yangshao Culture and Chinese liquor traditions, resulting in a harmonious fusion of classical motifs and modern sensibilities. Overcoming the challenge of translating Neolithic artistry into a contemporary context, the design team succeeded in crafting a product that bridges the past and present. The packaging not only serves as a vessel for beer but also as a piece of cultural art, enriching the enjoyment of the beverage with historical significance and aesthetic allure.

Recognized with the prestigious Platinum A' Packaging Design Award in 2025, Nong Li exemplifies world-class innovation and professionalism. The design advances the boundaries of art and technology, offering a distinctive hallmark for the brand and a reference point for the ongoing evolution of Chinese liquor culture. Nong Li invites consumers to savor not just a drink, but a story—one steeped in tradition, elegance, and the spirit of innovation.

Nong Li’s packaging is more than a container; it is a bridge between eras, inviting a new generation to appreciate the artistry and etiquette of Chinese brewing. Through its thoughtful design and cultural depth, Nong Li elevates the act of drinking into a refined, meaningful ritual.
