West Lake Beer’s packaging stands as a testament to the enduring allure of Hangzhou’s famed landscape. The design draws direct inspiration from West Lake’s renowned sceneries, notably the Broken Bridge and Three Ponds Mirroring the Moon, which are abstractly and artistically interpreted as visual symbols. These elements are seamlessly integrated into every facet of the packaging, allowing the product to serve as both a beverage and a medium for cultural storytelling.
Distinctive features set this packaging apart in a crowded market. The design incorporates classical Chinese typography, with fonts inspired by seal script and Song Dynasty calligraphy. The graceful arches and silhouettes evoke the architectural beauty of West Lake’s pavilions and bridges, while the negative space on the label references the Three Ponds Mirroring the Moon. This thoughtful blend of traditional motifs and modern design sensibilities creates an image that is both timeless and contemporary.
Material innovation further enhances the sensory experience. The exterior box features a gold stamping process and is finished with a matte film, offering a tactile sensation reminiscent of jade—smooth, warm, and refined. The bottle itself is crafted from high-quality green glass, which provides optimal protection against UV light, ensuring the beer’s freshness and flavor are preserved. These choices reflect a commitment to both aesthetic excellence and product integrity.
Interaction with the packaging is designed to be immersive. The arrangement of the Three Ponds Mirroring the Moon stone towers on the bottle visually represents the varying intensities of beer flavors, inviting consumers to explore and discuss their tasting experiences. This approach not only enhances enjoyment but also fosters social connection, aligning with the cultural richness embodied by the West Lake Beer brand.
The design process was informed by extensive research into West Lake’s cultural and artistic legacy. The team overcame the challenge of authentically capturing this essence by integrating architectural and calligraphic elements into the packaging’s visual language. The result is a harmonious blend of classical and modern influences, offering a unique reference point for the evolution of traditional beer branding.
West Lake Beer’s packaging has garnered international recognition, winning the Silver A' Packaging Design Award in 2025. This accolade highlights the project’s creative excellence, technical innovation, and its ability to evoke amazement and wonder through the marriage of art, culture, and contemporary design.
By transforming beer packaging into a celebration of West Lake’s beauty and heritage, China Resources Snow Breweries sets a new standard for cultural storytelling in product design, inviting consumers to savor not only the flavor but also the profound artistry behind each bottle.
