The Monomorph chair stands out for its unique construction: 39 identical plywood elements are meticulously connected by steel rods, forming a relaxing fauteuil that intrigues from every angle. This approach not only streamlines production but also significantly reduces material waste, aligning with contemporary demands for sustainable design. The chair’s modularity allows for easy assembly, making it accessible to anyone comfortable with an Allen wrench.
Wouter Van Riet Paap’s design process was rooted in architectural research, focusing on the balance between standardization and creative freedom. In construction, standardized elements are often used to minimize costs and maximize sustainability, but they can limit design possibilities. The Monomorph reverses this paradigm by letting the design dictate the standard element—a rounded wooden triangle—used interchangeably as seat, backrest, or leg. This principle of “design-led standardization” is at the core of the chair’s innovation.
Technological precision played a crucial role in realizing The Monomorph. The elements are CNC cut from a single sheet of plywood, ensuring consistency and minimizing waste. Various prototypes were tested, with the final version achieving the ideal balance of comfort and stability. Alternative variants use fewer elements, incorporating materials like vegan leather or recycled truck tarp for the seat and backrest, demonstrating the design’s adaptability.
With dimensions of 810mm depth, 650mm width, and 850mm height, The Monomorph is both substantial and ergonomic. The chair can be finished in pre-selected colors or left untreated in its RAW edition, offering versatility in aesthetic choices. Its flat-pack design enhances portability and ease of transport, further underscoring its practical appeal.
The Monomorph’s innovative approach has not gone unnoticed. In 2025, it was awarded the Iron A' Furniture Design Award, a recognition given to creations that excel in practicality, technical competence, and positive impact. As sustainability and modularity become increasingly vital in furniture design, The Monomorph exemplifies how thoughtful standardization can lead to both efficiency and artistic expression.
By reimagining the possibilities of a single shape, Wouter Van Riet Paap’s Monomorph chair invites a new era of modular, sustainable, and visually compelling furniture—demonstrating that simplicity in form can yield extraordinary results.
