Lighting remains a significant challenge for students in rural China, particularly during nighttime activities such as studying or navigating outdoor spaces. Recognizing this gap, designer Bihui Peng developed the Rural Student Friendly lamp—a multifunctional lighting fixture tailored to the unique needs of rural students. This innovative product not only enhances daily life but also demonstrates how thoughtful design can foster educational equity and environmental responsibility.
The lamp’s core strength lies in its versatility. Serving as a desk lamp, flashlight, and ambient light, it adapts seamlessly to various situations. Whether illuminating a study area, guiding a student outdoors at night, or providing gentle mood lighting, the lamp’s multifunctionality ensures it meets diverse requirements. The intuitive operation—pulling, rotating, and pressing to adjust modes and brightness—makes it accessible for users of all ages.
Sustainability is central to the lamp’s design. The shell is crafted from secondary recycled aluminum alloy, a choice that balances durability, aesthetics, and environmental impact. This material not only offers strength and corrosion resistance but also aligns with global trends toward eco-friendly manufacturing. The sandblasted finish further enhances both durability and visual appeal, ensuring the product remains attractive and robust over time.
Technological innovation underpins the lamp’s user experience. An intelligent control module, powered by microcontroller programming, recognizes quick and long press operations, allowing users to easily switch between light colors and adjust brightness. The metal casting production process supports large-scale manufacturing, making the lamp both cost-effective and widely accessible—a crucial consideration for rural communities.
Extensive research and community engagement informed the lamp’s development. By collaborating with local residents and conducting multiple prototype tests, the design team ensured the product genuinely addresses the daily challenges faced by rural students. The project, initiated in Jieyang City and completed in Shenzhen, stands as a testament to the power of user-centered design in creating practical, meaningful solutions.
The Rural Student Friendly lamp’s recognition with the Iron A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2025 highlights its excellence in combining functionality, innovation, and social impact. As rural communities continue to seek affordable and effective lighting solutions, this lamp offers a beacon of hope—illuminating not just spaces, but also opportunities for learning and growth.
