Gondola Hydrofoil: Tradition Meets Futuristic Watercraft Design

Electric elegance inspired by Venice redefines water tourism

Blending Venetian heritage with cutting-edge technology, the Gondola Hydrofoil by Wang Yuchen and Wang Xuanzheng introduces a new era of sustainable luxury in water travel.

The Gondola Hydrofoil is a remarkable fusion of classic Venetian design and modern engineering. Drawing inspiration from the iconic gondola, the project channels the curved, moon-like lines and ornate details of traditional Italian boats. The influence of Venice’s rich cultural history is evident, particularly in the six-toothed battle-axe halberd motif at the bow, a nod to centuries-old craftsmanship. This thoughtful homage to tradition is seamlessly integrated with the sleek, dynamic form of a contemporary hydrofoil, resulting in a vessel that is both visually striking and culturally resonant.

What sets the Gondola Hydrofoil apart is its harmonious blend of elegance and innovation. Designed to accommodate four passengers, the electric boat offers a quiet, environmentally friendly ride, making it ideal for both high-speed excursions and leisurely cruises. The use of advanced materials such as aluminum for the hull, carbon fiber for the hydrofoils, and high-grade teak for the luggage deck ensures durability, lightness, and a luxurious tactile experience. The platinum-colored metallic paint and metallic-infused canvas canopy further elevate the aesthetic, reflecting a commitment to both form and function.

The vessel’s technical prowess is equally impressive. With a hull length of 13,450 mm and a width of 2,820 mm, the hydrofoil system allows for a maximum rotation angle of 70 degrees, enhancing maneuverability and adaptability across various water conditions. The electric motor, combined with rotatable hydrofoils and adjustable propellers, provides smooth transitions between speed and relaxation, catering to diverse user preferences. This versatility positions the Gondola Hydrofoil as a pioneering solution for modern water tourism, particularly in culturally significant regions like Venice.

The design process was marked by a deep exploration of both aesthetic and technical challenges. Extensive research into Venetian boat-building traditions and modern hydrofoil technology informed every aspect of the project. The team, led by Wang Yuchen and Wang Xuanzheng, collaborated with Wang Shutong and Ye Feng to ensure that the final product honored its cultural roots while embracing contemporary innovation. The project, initiated in Qingdao, China, and showcased at Milan Design Week in 2024, exemplifies a global approach to design, bridging East and West through shared appreciation for craftsmanship and progress.

Recognition for the Gondola Hydrofoil has been significant, with the project earning the Iron A' Yacht and Marine Vessels Design Award in 2025. This accolade highlights the vessel’s practical innovation, technical excellence, and its potential to redefine water-based tourism experiences. As waterfront cities seek sustainable and culturally meaningful transportation solutions, the Gondola Hydrofoil stands as a testament to the enduring power of thoughtful design.

By merging the storied past of Venetian gondolas with the promise of electric hydrofoil technology, the Gondola Hydrofoil offers a glimpse into the future of luxury water travel—where heritage and innovation glide together across the waves.
