The concept of Nirvana draws inspiration from Buddhist enlightenment and the role of rhythmic sound in spiritual practice. Central to the installation is the Wooden Fish, a traditional East Asian percussion instrument used in Mahayana Buddhist rituals to maintain focus during meditation. By integrating this symbol of mindfulness with contemporary art and technology, the installation encourages viewers to reflect on their own spiritual journeys and the pursuit of inner peace.
What distinguishes Nirvana is its innovative use of physical computing to animate a matrix of motorized Wooden Fish. Each instrument is equipped with a motor-controlled mallet, creating a continuous, synchronized soundscape. This immersive environment operates autonomously, enveloping the audience in rhythmic patterns that evoke both ancient rituals and modern kinetic art. The seamless blend of handcrafted wooden forms and mechanical precision highlights the harmony between tradition and innovation.
The realization of Nirvana involved a sophisticated combination of solid wood, plywood, DC motors, sensors, and custom-designed PCB boards. Each panel measures two feet wide by eight feet high, with a total of 96 motors meticulously synchronized for flawless operation. The development process required overcoming significant technical challenges, including the design of robust connection mechanisms using custom 3D-printed parts and the precise fabrication of components with CNC technology.
Exhibited at the ITP Spring Show in New York in May 2024, Nirvana captivated audiences with its autonomous operation and immersive soundscape. The project’s technical ingenuity and creative vision were recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, honoring its contribution to experiential and immersive design. According to the award committee, such works exemplify best practices in art, science, and technology, enhancing quality of life and inspiring new perspectives.
Nirvana stands as a testament to the power of design to bridge cultural heritage and contemporary innovation. By reinterpreting spiritual practices through interactive technology, the installation invites contemplation and connection, making a profound impact on both art and lifestyle.
