Lucky Bread stands as a testament to the enduring power of cultural heritage in modern design. Inspired by the intricate wedding bagels of Marathos, Crete, this project celebrates the fading art of bread ornamentation, once central to local wedding rituals. Each bread ring is meticulously handcrafted by skilled Cretan artisans, known as xompliastres, who infuse every piece with symbols representing prosperity, transformation, and protection. The result is a gift that transcends mere food, becoming a vessel for well-wishes and shared traditions.
The uniqueness of Lucky Bread lies in its thoughtful fusion of old and new. Traditional motifs such as the lotus, dragonfly, and tree of life are reinterpreted through modern design sensibilities, offering recipients a personalized and meaningful experience. The bread is presented in a beautifully illustrated box, where each symbol’s story is visually narrated, and accompanied by a leaflet explaining the significance behind every motif. This approach not only preserves ancient craftsmanship but also invites a new generation to engage with Cretan culture in a contemporary context.
Realizing this design required close collaboration between the design team and local artisans. The process involved adapting traditional kneading techniques to accommodate new, more intricate symbols, a creative challenge that pushed the boundaries of conventional bread-making. The packaging, crafted from Paper Velvet 150g and enhanced with varnish and lamination, complements the artisanal bread with tactile elegance and visual storytelling. The finished product, with a diameter of 330mm and a height of 80mm, is both a sensory and symbolic delight.
Research for Lucky Bread drew from the diverse backgrounds of the design team, who explored regional customs to select the most compelling traditions. The project’s timeline, spanning from March to October in Athens and Crete, culminated in the delivery of 150 bespoke bread rings to clients. Each box, containing the bread and an explanatory leaflet, serves as a thoughtful corporate gift and a celebration of collective hopes for the new year.
Lucky Bread’s recognition with the Iron A' Packaging Design Award in 2025 underscores its success in integrating professional standards with cultural storytelling. The project not only preserves a vanishing art form but also elevates it, offering a unique blend of tradition, innovation, and heartfelt symbolism in every box.
This creation by Antonia Skaraki and her team exemplifies how design can honor the past while shaping meaningful experiences for the present, making Lucky Bread a memorable gift that carries forward the spirit of Cretan artistry and goodwill.
