Textbooks have long been a staple of education, but their visual appeal often lags behind their educational importance. Kiwook Kim’s Science Stories in Daily Life project addresses this gap by transforming science textbook covers into engaging works of art. The series covers a broad spectrum of scientific disciplines, including physics, chemistry, life sciences, earth sciences, and more, each represented through imaginative illustrations that break away from traditional textbook aesthetics.
The design team, led by Creative Director Hyunji Son and supported by Project Manager Kiwook Kim, Designer Byungjin Jang, and Illustrator MOMENT SERIES, focused on creating synergy among the diverse fields of science. Each cover features unique graphics and color schemes tailored to its subject, while maintaining a cohesive visual language across the series. This approach ensures that students can easily distinguish between subjects while recognizing their interconnectedness.
To enhance the tactile and visual experience, the covers employ advanced post-processing techniques, such as holographic elements, alongside playful details that invite closer inspection. The result is a set of textbooks that not only communicate scientific concepts but also spark curiosity and positive engagement. According to the design team, the use of wit and imaginative visuals helps students approach science with greater enthusiasm and familiarity.
Research for the project emphasized the importance of both consistency and differentiation. By intuitively highlighting the characteristics of each subject, the covers offer students a convenient and enjoyable way to navigate complex material. The simple yet effective use of color and graphics also allows for scalability, making it possible to expand the series to additional scientific topics in the future.
Science Stories in Daily Life has been recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, honoring its creative ingenuity and contribution to educational design. The project exemplifies how thoughtful design can bridge the gap between art and science, ultimately improving the quality of life by making learning more accessible and inspiring for students worldwide.
As these innovative textbooks enter classrooms in March 2025, they stand as a testament to the power of design in shaping educational experiences and nurturing the next generation of scientific thinkers.
