Located in Mapo-gu, Seoul, Cafe Lusso stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design in transforming urban experiences. The project, completed in March 2024, draws inspiration from Rousseau’s ideals of awakening and change, seeking to counterbalance the relentless pace of city life with an environment that prioritizes comfort, natural beauty, and meaningful interaction. The name “Lusso” itself reflects a commitment to avoiding excessive modernity, instead favoring a space that evolves gracefully over time.
One of Lusso’s defining features is its use of natural materials—wood, stone, brick, and steel—that not only provide visual warmth but also develop unique patinas as they age. Small gardens interspersed among the seating areas offer visual and psychological respite, inviting guests to pause and reconnect with nature. These gardens reinterpret traditional Eastern courtyards, creating a gentle contrast to the surrounding concrete cityscape and fostering a sense of tranquility within the bustling metropolis.
The design team, led by Seung-man Lee and Se-been Choi, faced the challenge of harmonizing Eastern sensibilities with contemporary urban aesthetics. Curved steel partitions, inspired by the shade-giving Zelkova tree found at traditional Korean village entrances, softly diffuse light and guide the flow of the space. Wooden louvers on the facade and counter evoke Eastern latticework, subtly concealing functional elements while maintaining openness and privacy. The careful selection of indoor plants further enhances the sense of calm, ensuring that every detail contributes to the overall atmosphere of relaxation.
Lusso’s layout, spanning 230 square meters, is meticulously planned to support both social interaction and individual reflection. Cozy seating arrangements and the strategic placement of greenery encourage conversation and connection, while also allowing for moments of solitude. The use of eco-friendly materials underscores a commitment to sustainability, reflecting broader trends in contemporary design that prioritize both environmental responsibility and user well-being.
Recognition for Lusso’s innovative approach came in the form of a Silver A' Design Award in 2025, highlighting its excellence in interior space, retail, and exhibition design. The project’s success lies in its ability to create a distinctive identity within Seoul’s competitive café landscape, offering a unique blend of natural serenity and modern sophistication that resonates with urban dwellers seeking respite from daily pressures.
By seamlessly integrating natural elements and thoughtful design, Cafe Lusso redefines what a modern café can be—an oasis of calm and connection, where the passage of time enriches both materials and experiences. This project stands as an inspiring example for designers and coffee enthusiasts alike, demonstrating the enduring value of spaces that nurture both body and spirit.
