Churros, the innovative lighting collection by Yi Hsien Lin, draws inspiration from the 19th-century invention of explosion-proof light tubes, a staple of industrial design now celebrated as vintage icons. The designer reinterprets this utilitarian form through an Oriental lens, referencing the rhythmic repetition found in East Asian objects such as bamboo blinds, water wheels, and lanterns. This cultural resonance is reflected in the lamp’s elongated, churro-like silhouette, blending historical reference with contemporary minimalism.
The Churros lamp distinguishes itself through its unique use of wooden strips, which evoke warmth while maintaining a sense of minimalist order. The design’s strength lies in its arrayed structure, creating a visually striking volume that enhances any interior. Functionally, the lamp offers both upward and downward illumination, ensuring even lighting on tabletops and providing indirect light above, which adds depth and spatial layering to its environment. This dual-lighting approach not only improves functionality but also elevates the ambiance of modern living spaces.
Sustainability is at the core of the Churros Lighting Collection. The production process prioritizes the reuse of materials from the original space, reducing waste and ensuring each lamp is uniquely connected to its environment. By integrating recycled materials and supporting localized craftsmanship, the design embodies the principles of the circular economy. This approach not only minimizes environmental impact but also celebrates the uniqueness of each piece, reinforcing the importance of responsible design in today’s world.
The Churros collection features a range of pendant and floor lamps, with models varying in size to suit diverse spatial needs. Technical specifications include pendant lights in dimensions such as 100 x 100 x 1070 mm and 160 x 160 x 1070 mm, as well as a floor lamp measuring 160 x 160 x 700 mm. Each model is crafted to provide optimal illumination while serving as a sculptural focal point within the room.
Launched in 2024 in Taiwan after a year-long development process, Churros has garnered international acclaim, winning the Bronze A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2025. This accolade recognizes designs that excel in creativity, technical skill, and contributions to quality of life. The Churros lamp not only exemplifies best practices in art, science, and technology but also demonstrates how thoughtful design can make the world a better place.
Churros stands as a testament to the power of cultural inspiration, sustainable innovation, and artistic craftsmanship in lighting design. By merging the warmth of traditional materials with modern functionality, Yi Hsien Lin’s creation invites a new appreciation for the intersection of heritage and contemporary living.
