Innova Cafe: Redefining Coffee Culture in Istanbul

Innovative design merges art, comfort, and community in Sancaktepe.

The concept behind Innova Cafe emerged in response to shifting social habits following the global pandemic. Harun Ayaydin envisioned a venue where guests could escape daily fatigue and stress, surrounded by calming tones of green, brown, and gray. This approach not only addresses the evolving needs of urban dwellers but also sets a new standard for coffee shop design in Turkey and beyond.

Distinctive features define Innova Cafe’s unique identity. Illuminated mirrors on the ceiling and walls create a striking sense of depth, while bespoke wall paintings add an artistic touch. The space is divided into dedicated zones for reading, working, and socializing, each carefully curated to enhance the overall experience. Music and coffee serve as the heart of the cafe, fostering a welcoming atmosphere for both relaxation and productivity.

The realization of the design involved significant structural changes, including the removal of existing walls and the construction of new ones to better define the space. The bar, crafted from marble, is strategically positioned at the back to guide customer flow. Seating at the entrance utilizes fabric and wood, prioritizing comfort and convenience. The use of plants and natural materials further contributes to a sense of tranquility and openness.

Technical specifications highlight the thoughtful planning behind the project. Long seating areas flank the entrance, while a high-ceilinged workspace and a prominent wooden bookshelf encourage extended visits. Epoxy flooring with wood and concrete finishes was selected for durability and aesthetic appeal, reflecting the cafe’s high frequency of use. Rotational displays and flexible seating arrangements allow customers to tailor their experience to their needs.

Innova Cafe’s design journey was shaped by close collaboration with stakeholders and a commitment to innovation. Challenges such as creating a spacious, calming environment were addressed through careful material selection and layout optimization. The result is a multifunctional venue that seamlessly integrates art, education, and leisure, earning the Iron A' Design Award in 2025 for its excellence in interior space and retail design.
