The “Daughters” concert, held in Taipei in August 2022, stands as a testament to the evolving nature of human communication. Drawing inspiration from the chapter “How the Brain Got Language” in Wu Ming-Yi’s “The Land of Little Rain,” the event complements Enno Cheng’s album, which delves into the complexities of connection. The stage’s centerpiece—four independently moving square LED screens—serves as a metaphor for breaking through language barriers, using words, gestures, and sounds to create a shared visual and emotional language.
What distinguishes this concert is its innovative integration of music, visuals, body language, and text. The program is carefully curated to highlight the diversity of communication methods, ensuring that each message resonates with the audience. Dancers employ sign language and Taiwanese Hokkien, while interactive musical arrangements invite clapping and movement, fostering a sense of unity and reflection. This multisensory approach not only captures the essence of each song but also encourages deeper contemplation on themes such as empathy and human connection.
Technically, the design features four 6m x 6m LED screens, divided into eight 3m x 6m panels, capable of vertical and horizontal movement. Traditional LED screens were chosen over transparent alternatives to achieve sharper light and shadow effects, enhancing the interplay between visuals and lighting. The screens’ ability to open, close, stretch, and overlap introduces new spatial dynamics, sometimes forming a complete square for added visual impact. This flexibility allows the stage to adapt seamlessly to different musical segments, maximizing the immersive experience.
Behind the scenes, the creative team faced significant challenges, particularly in balancing the ceiling load with the movement of the heavy LED panels. Pre-show inspections and collaboration with lighting designers led to the selection of Fine Art 156 lights, which offer unlimited rotation and safety compliance. The result is a meticulously engineered stage that supports both artistic vision and technical reliability.
The “Daughters” concert is more than a musical event; it is a celebration of communication’s endless possibilities. By combining body language, text, sound, and symbols in ever-changing configurations, the performance invites audiences to reconsider how messages are shared and understood. The design’s success was recognized with a Silver A’ Design Award in 2025, honoring its remarkable blend of creativity, technical excellence, and emotional resonance.
Enno Cheng’s “Daughters” concert, brought to life by B’in Live, exemplifies how thoughtful stage design can elevate live performances into transformative experiences. Through innovative technology and artistic collaboration, the event not only entertains but also inspires audiences to reflect on the universal power of human connection.
