Yan Art Museum: Where Architecture Embraces Nature

Guanyu Tao’s design harmonizes culture, landscape, and innovation in Rushan

Drawing inspiration from the dramatic Rushan mountain range, Yan Art Museum by Guanyu Tao reimagines the relationship between built form and the natural environment. The museum’s design echoes the stony textures and flowing contours of its surroundings, while its courtyard-style layout pays homage to the organic forms of traditional Chinese villages. This approach weaves local culture into every aspect of the structure, transforming the museum into both a tribute to and an extension of its landscape.

Distinct from conventional museums, Yan Art Museum transforms the site’s natural slopes into functional elements, such as pathways, plazas, and viewing platforms. The use of textured concrete, reminiscent of rocky formations, allows the building to blend effortlessly with its environment. Integrated studios and galleries foster interaction between visitors and local artists, making the museum a vibrant hub for cultural expression and innovation.

The realization of Yan Art Museum employs form board texture reinforced concrete, ensuring both aesthetic appeal and structural stability. Landscaping with shallow-rooted plants protects the building’s integrity, while three interconnected levels—linked by stairs and elevators—are carefully oriented to harmonize with the site’s topography. This thoughtful integration ensures accessibility and enhances the visitor experience.

Spanning 1,650 square meters across three levels, the museum features a courtyard-style entrance, artist studios, dynamic galleries, and an open-air theater for traditional performances. The design’s deconstructivist influence, inspired by architects like Thom Mayne and Zaha Hadid, is evident in its bold forms and innovative spatial composition. Research for the project included site, cultural, and user analysis, utilizing advanced digital tools to refine the structure’s harmony with its setting.

One of the project’s key challenges was addressing the site’s varied slopes. The design cleverly transforms elevation changes into advantageous viewing platforms and visual corridors, enhancing both functionality and aesthetic appeal. This strategic use of the landscape allows the building to blend seamlessly with its environment, creating a unique and immersive cultural destination.

Yan Art Museum, awarded the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in 2025, exemplifies how architecture can celebrate local heritage while advancing design innovation. The museum not only enriches the cultural landscape of Rushan but also sets a benchmark for environmentally integrated, community-centered design.
