Aeriform Armchair: Sculptural Comfort Meets Modern Innovation

Kristian Ruden’s award-winning design reimagines luxury seating for contemporary interiors.

Inspired by the graceful form of bird wings, the Aeriform Armchair by Kristian Ruden blends artful design with ergonomic innovation, setting a new standard for high-end comfort and visual presence.

The Aeriform Armchair stands as a testament to the union of artistry and functionality. Drawing from the natural elegance of bird wings and the iconic Ribbon Chair by Pierre Paulin, Kristian Ruden has created a piece that evokes both an embrace and a sense of dynamic movement. Developed entirely within virtual reality, the design process allowed for fluid experimentation with form, resulting in a ribbon-like structure that appears suspended in space. This approach not only enabled creative freedom but also facilitated precise ergonomic adjustments, ensuring the chair’s comfort matches its striking appearance.

What sets the Aeriform apart is its commitment to both luxury and practicality. The chair’s sculptural silhouette, crafted from a three-layer fiberglass frame with an XPS foam core, is complemented by plush upholstery in fabric or leather. The single seam running around the edge highlights meticulous craftsmanship, while the steel base and 3D-printed shell provide robust support. The inclusion of a Lazy Susan and a springy base introduces gentle movement, enhancing the user’s experience and making the chair suitable for a variety of seating preferences.

Ergonomics played a central role in the development of Aeriform. Extensive research, including anthropometric studies and hands-on testing with a custom-built jig, informed the chair’s dimensions and angles. Testers ranging from 18 to 60 years old contributed to refining the design for optimal comfort across diverse body types and seating positions. This dedication to research addressed the gap in comfort studies within traditional ergonomic literature, resulting in a chair that supports natural postures and encourages intuitive interaction.

The realization of Aeriform involved a blend of advanced technologies and traditional craftsmanship. The prototype began with CNC-milled XPS foam, layered with fiberglass and finished with epoxy resin for durability. Laser-cut steel and 3D-printed elements formed the base, while the upholstery was meticulously sewn and fitted. This combination of innovative materials and precise assembly techniques underscores the chair’s status as a luxury object designed for longevity and aesthetic impact.

Recognized with a Bronze A' Furniture Design Award in 2025, the Aeriform Armchair exemplifies the best practices in art, science, and design. Its presence elevates any modern interior, offering not just a seat, but a sculptural statement that enhances quality of life through comfort and style.

The Aeriform Armchair by Kristian Ruden demonstrates how thoughtful design and technological innovation can redefine everyday objects. As a centerpiece in contemporary spaces, it invites users to experience seating as both an art form and a source of well-being.
