Eden Rise: Vertical Eco Living for Chicago’s Future

Mile-high towers blend urban farming, sustainability, and community life.

Eden Rise by Yuhan Zhang and Dreama Simeng Lin reimagines Chicago’s skyline as a beacon of sustainable urban living, tackling food deserts with innovative vertical farming and eco-friendly architecture.

Addressing the pressing issue of food deserts in Chicago, Eden Rise proposes a transformative vision for urban life. The project integrates vertical farms within a series of interconnected skyscrapers, creating a self-sustaining ecosystem where fresh produce is grown locally. Drawing formal inspiration from the city’s water landscape, the towers’ organic, droplet-like shapes symbolize renewal and abundance. This approach not only combats food inequality but also sets a new standard for sustainable city living.

What distinguishes Eden Rise is its holistic approach to urban sustainability. The design extends Chicago’s green belt skyward, turning the city’s iconic skyline into a living, breathing ecosystem. Vertical farms embedded within the towers reduce the carbon footprint of food transportation and provide year-round access to nutritious produce. Advanced green technologies, such as wind turbines, cloud harvesting, and rainwater collection, power the complex and ensure environmental harmony. The breathable atrium and diagrid structure maximize natural light and airflow, enhancing both energy efficiency and indoor comfort.

The architectural realization of Eden Rise relies on cutting-edge engineering. Four conjoined towers are supported by a diagrid exoskeleton, which weaves fluid lines across the façade and increases structural depth. This system allows for expansive inner voids, flooding the interiors with daylight and fresh air. The design’s technical sophistication is matched by its commitment to community: sky terraces at multiple levels serve as communal hubs, fostering interaction and providing essential green spaces in the heart of the city.

Eden Rise functions as a dynamic vertical community, seamlessly integrating residential, commercial, educational, and leisure spaces. Hotels offer panoramic city views, while schools embedded throughout the towers ensure accessible education for families. The project’s research-driven approach addresses the root causes of food deserts, aiming to bridge socio-economic gaps and improve public health. By engaging with local communities and pioneering new agricultural systems, Eden Rise demonstrates how architecture can drive social equity and environmental stewardship.

Recognized with a Silver A’ Futuristic Design Award in 2025, Eden Rise exemplifies the future of urban living. Its innovative blend of technology, sustainability, and community engagement positions it as a model for cities worldwide seeking to restore balance between nature and the built environment. As Chicago looks to the next half-century, Eden Rise stands as a testament to the power of visionary design in shaping healthier, more equitable urban futures.
