Cohesion: A Board Game Strengthening Family Bonds

Innovative gameplay fosters communication and harmony in families

Chan Wing Ki’s board game, Cohesion, addresses the rise in family conflicts by transforming communication challenges into opportunities for growth and understanding.

Inspired by the unique pressures families faced during the pandemic, Cohesion was developed to turn moments of discord into valuable lessons in cooperation. Chan Wing Ki recognized that while increased time together often led to misunderstandings, these conflicts frequently originated from positive intentions. The game’s design encourages families to openly communicate, understand differing perspectives, and work collaboratively toward harmony.

Cohesion distinguishes itself as a cooperative, fast-reaction board game specifically crafted for families experiencing negative relationships. Unlike traditional competitive games, Cohesion requires players to unite, leveraging values such as appreciation, harmony, discipline, and warmth to resolve conflicts. The gameplay simulates real-life challenges, teaching players constructive problem-solving and reinforcing the importance of solidarity within the family unit.

The realization of Cohesion involved a meticulous process, blending research with creative design. The game features 4 character cards, 52 value cards, 26 event cards, and 17 conflict cards, each representing core aspects of family life. Acrylic tiles and a visually engaging board enhance the tactile experience, while iterative playtesting ensured that the mechanics balanced entertainment with meaningful engagement. The hourglass element introduces a sense of urgency, motivating players to resolve conflicts efficiently through communication and teamwork.

Research underpinning Cohesion highlights the shift from extended to nuclear families, a transition that has increased instability and conflict, particularly among children. Drawing on studies from the Hong Kong Family Welfare Society, the game incorporates a scoring system based on family time, atmosphere, responsibilities, and care. This approach not only promotes positive values but also offers families a structured way to improve their interactions and emotional well-being.

One of the key challenges in developing Cohesion was creating gameplay that effectively promoted cooperation over competition. Addressing diverse communication styles required extensive research and feedback from family wellness experts. By refining the game through multiple playtests, Chan Wing Ki ensured that Cohesion fosters appreciation, collaboration, and a sense of belonging, ultimately supporting families in building stronger, healthier relationships.

Recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in 2025, Cohesion stands as a testament to the power of design in addressing real-world challenges. The game not only entertains but also equips families with essential tools for navigating conflicts, reinforcing the importance of teamwork and positive values in everyday life.
