Tamrin Space: A Cultural Haven for Artists in Tehran

Bahador Kashani Madani’s design redefines artistic collaboration and heritage.

Tamrin Space, envisioned by Bahador Kashani Madani, transforms a historic Tehran house into a vibrant cultural center for music and theater artists, blending tradition with modernity.

Tamrin Space stands as a testament to the enduring value of cultural preservation and creative innovation. Located in one of Tehran’s prominent artistic neighborhoods, this project was driven by a clear vision: to offer a dedicated, independent space where artists could collaborate, create, and thrive. The client’s dream of a communal house for music and theater professionals shaped every aspect of the design, resulting in a multifunctional venue that celebrates both heritage and contemporary needs.

The architectural approach emphasizes authenticity and subtlety. Bahador Kashani Madani’s design philosophy acknowledges the impermanence of structures, focusing on precise yet hidden details that reveal beauty in simplicity. The layout was meticulously planned to maximize access, views, and natural light, while also providing accessible spaces for disabled individuals. The use of a skylight and a full-height central void allows daylight to permeate every corner, creating a luminous and inviting atmosphere that enhances both the garden and interior spaces.

Material selection and restoration were handled with great care to preserve the building’s original character. Plaster volumes for café counters, reception areas, and the library appear to emerge organically from the walls, while handmade tiles and exposed brickwork highlight the passage of time. Even imperfections, such as soot-stained bricks and untouched surfaces, were intentionally retained to showcase the building’s history and authenticity. The integration of a mature mulberry tree near the library window provides a tranquil reading nook, demonstrating a thoughtful connection to nature.

Technical challenges were met with innovative solutions. Structural reinforcement involved the installation of new shear walls and a unified foundation system, addressing issues of stability and moisture. A drainage channel was added to prevent rising damp, ensuring the building’s longevity. These interventions, combined with careful restoration, have extended the life of a valuable house that might otherwise have faced demolition.

Tamrin Space’s location near major cultural landmarks such as the City Theater and Roudaki Hall enhances its role as a hub for artistic activity. The project not only revitalizes a historic structure but also serves as a model for adaptive reuse in Tehran. Its success has been recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, honoring its creative ingenuity and contribution to the quality of life for the city’s artistic community.

By harmonizing aesthetics, functionality, and inclusivity, Tamrin Space offers a blueprint for future cultural centers. Bahador Kashani Madani’s work demonstrates how thoughtful design can breathe new life into heritage buildings, fostering environments where art and community flourish.
